PureAGT Season 8, Live Show #5 – SPOILERS!!! Who Made it Through to the Next Round?
An interesting results show, to say the least – and I’m not just referring to Train’s odd duet with Ashley Monroe, or the comedic stylings of last season’s runner-up, Tom Cotter. Someone unexpected made it through to the semifinals, they (of course) pitted the Castro siblings against one another, and it was revealed that each judge gets ONE wild card pick, and two of those acts will be seen in each semifinal round.
…now that we’ve got that out of the way, I can share that the four acts that advanced to the semifinals were Dave Fenley, Catapult Entertainment, D’Angelo & Amanda, and John Wing (who beat out Duo Resonance in the judges’ choice by a vote of 3-to-1). But don’t weep too much for Duo Resonance, because Heidi turned around and used her wild card pick on them – so they, too, are going to the semifinals next week…along with Tone the Chiefrocca, who was Mel’s wild card pick. Smartest choice Mel has made all season, if you ask me 😉
So many thoughts on tonight’s results…I guess first off, damn you producers for doing exactly what I predicted you’d do all season, and make those poor Castros stand up there together while the verdict was read! I knew they’d go for that – they were loving the sibling vs. sibling thing wayyyy too much. But my heart just broke watching little Ruby break down in tears, and then big bro trying to comfort her and saying he wasn’t all that happy about making the semifinals, because he “felt terrible that my sister didn’t make it.” And all the while, poor Nick is trying to cheer everybody up…thank god for Nick, sometimes he seems like one of the few people on this show that actually has a conscience. Dave Fenley? I think he should feel really blessed, because I thought he had totally blown it with that song choice last night. I’m actually happy to see him advancing, but man – he really better pick a good song in the semifinals. Catapult? Duh. Although all this gushing I’m hearing about them being the “best performance ever on AGT” seems a bit over-the-top, and I’m wondering if they’re gunning hard for Catapult to make the finals. John? Eh, he’s mildly funny…but I think Taylor & Angela are both going to whip him good in the semifinals.
All in all, I’m just glad that I’m gonna hear “B-O-O-T-Y” one last time, and I get to marvel once more at Tone’s ridiculous face-pulling and Coley-Cole’s comedic hype guy-ing. What do you guys think? 🙂
Next weeks Wildcard? Im confused. Each judge picks one act? Is the show going to be a half an hour? Weird. I havent watched a results show in weeks. Too much filler. Can’t say Im surpised by the results. I wish Sprice made it though. Rube Goldberg machines fascinate me. We don’t need anymore singers. This show should be called “America’s Got Singers and some other cool stuff but mostly Singers with sob stories” I liked Anna, Ciana, Hitman, Cami, 3Penny, Forte, and I’ll take Jimmy, but the rest were unnecessary. And other good singers could’ve gotten through. Milton shouldn’t have been cut, and I’d prefer Travis, who’s soprano ability makes him more memorable than the other two solo opera guys. Speaking of opera, my brother was watching the Vegas auditions with me and he asked if they are opera singers, why they’re using microphones. I’ve been an all around music buff for as long as I remember, but it never occured to me. I was taught that the first rule of opera is there are no microphones. Are mics required or do they just not have the lungs for it? Sorry it came just out of no where, but I’ve been a bit curious and pushed it to the back of my mind.
Demonic producers. They just had to get their drama fix. The format of the show made it feel like D Angelo was directly responsible for his little sister’s failiure to make it. The worst part? It’s probably true. I bet he took plenty of votes away from her, as 1 ballroom dancing act was better than the other. I’m a huge supporter of Tone, but that was a bad pick in my opinion. He has great stage presence, and it’s a fun act, but I think there were other people that deserved a spot more. Tone knew he was never going to be a serious competitor, and I think America knows that Tone won’t be a competitor. The sing itself hasn’t gotten stale yet, but I don’t think there’s another spin on it that can make it better than what we’ve already seen. Also, can somebody fill me in on how the Wild Card thing worked? Did the 2 guys just stick them in the back pocket and announce them next week?
Does anyone know who’s performing next week? I’m pretty sure none of this week’s is.
I wonder who will be Howard`s and Howie`s wildcard choices?
Phew…lot of questions flying…let me see if I can tackle them all…
There is no “wild card round” – the judges just each get to pick 1 act to bring back for the semifinals. Two of them compete in next week’s semifinal; two of them compete in the following week’s semifinal. We’ll be seeing Heidi & Mel’s picks (Duo Resonance & Tone the Chiefrocca) next week; Howard & Howie will announce their wild card picks during next week’s results and they’ll compete the following week. And that kind of answers your question, Dan – Duo Resonance is the only act from this week that will be performing again next week, by virtue of being Heidi’s wild card pick. I’ll be posting the list of next week’s acts shortly, as well as a prediction post for who Howard & Howie might pick for their wild cards.
i am heartbroken that sprice went home. john is okay but i think he is going to get destroyed in the semi finals. bit suprised dave went through but i still like him. d’angelo and amanda and catapult were no brainers and everyone else was not shocking at all. okay now let’s talk about kids, i don’t think kids should be on this show it’s too much for them and no one wants to see a kid cry. i thought it was terrible when ruby started crying and it was even more painful to watch d’angelo near tears because his sister didn’t make it. i think there should be a lower age limit like no one under 15 because i just don’t want to see these get thier dreams crushed at such a young age and on live television.
@Brendan – I disagree about not having kids on AGT. Part of the appeal of AGT is that it’s open to ALL ages – there’s no such thing as being too old or too young to do this show, and there’s really no other show that’s like that. However, I do think the producers need to be more circumspect about how they handle having kids on the show – I thought from the beginning that pitting the Castro siblings against one another was only going to cause heartbreak, and the fact that they made them compete against one another in the same round and get their verdict while standing up onstage together was just a classless move, IMO. That said, I also think part of the blame probably lies with Manny & Lori for letting both D’Angelo & Ruby compete this season – they had to know that it was a possibility that one kid would make it and the other wouldn’t. If nothing else, I think this was a good learning experience for both the Castro siblings AND the producers of this show: you win some & you lose some, but there’s no reason for those making the choice to be unnecessarily cruel.
I’m ok with the results this week, although I would’ve liked to see Sprice advance.
I agree with your comment 7, Courtney. Show biz is a harsh industry and the sooner they learn this, the better.
