Susan Boyle Was Terrible on America’s Got Talent
Honestly, did anyone really like the performance of Susan Boyle on America’s Got Talent? Sure, I get how we fell in love with Susan Boyle when she sang the first time. It was shocking that her voice was coming out of that image and that story. Her idiosyncrasies were interesting and made us laugh. They even made her endearing. However, her performance on America’s Got Talent last night was boring. She’s not a bad singer, but she’d never have been invited to the AGT stage if she hadn’t gotten so big on the stage before.
Maybe I’m wrong and there are a ton of Susan Boyle fans out there that loved her performance. If there are, more power to you. For me personally, it was terrible. I literally turned the channel. In case you missed it, you can see the video below. Am I way off base?
Susan Boyle Performs!
I loved the performance! No, it wasn’t what you normally see on America’s Got Talent. It was an emotionally deep song with a meaning. Some people may not get the meaning and if so won’t like the song. I did get it and loved it.
Could be. Reminds me of when I went to see Les Miserables in NYC. If my friend wouldn’t have prepared me properly, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it nearly as much as I did.
I guess song choice matters a lot for special guests like it does for contestants.
I think you didn’t understand the meaning of the song, or didn’t like the meaning. This was an outstanding performance of a song by Abba with emotion so deep that if you didn’t listen to the words and feel Susan’s emotion, you need to wake up your soul.
I thought Susan Boyle showed an entirely new dimension of her talent with last night’s performance and I was completely awestruck with the power of her voice and her drama and emotions. I loved that she chose a musical showstopper to launch her new CD.
I can see saying that it wasn’t your type of song, but saying she was “terrible” when she has such a glorious voice seems quite harsh to me.
So, to answer your question, yes I believe you are off base with your comments.
Did you write this just to generate comments? If you really
feel this way, I do feel sorry for you. Because you just don’t get it. Every once in awhile we are gifted with something so unique and beautiful that is not realized by some. You must be “one of those” unfortunate ones..
I personally loved this performance. I can’t wait to buy her new album ( I am actually very proud of her that she got two best selling albums already).
John, she might not be your taste, but I heard she will have some original and upbeat songs on her new album. Try listen to her new album when it comes out on November.
John, hon, you are so off base, I doubt if you can even see the field. If you found that riveting performance “boring”, I can’t imagine what you would find entertaining. Susan stood and delivered the most intense and emotionally charged song of her life last night. I didn’t fall in love with Susan Boyle because I was surprised that she could sing, or because I found her “funny”. I fell in love with her because she has one of the most incredible voices I’ve ever heard and because she doesn’t rely on gimmics. She simply sings. But she does not sing “simply”. Until Susan Boyle graced the music world, it had been sorely lacking in artists who could actually sing.
I understand that there are always going to be those who, for whatever reason, (a tin ear perhaps…there’s a smile here btw), will not like Susan’s music. But thankfully, there are millions who do.
I’m glad to see that the Susan Boyle fan club found the site.
Maybe it was my down day yesterday that had me in a grumpy mood when I watched her perform. I definitely wasn’t in the mood for a deep thoughtful song at that point. I was ready for a high energy upbeat song.
Although, the song choice also likely played a part in it. She’s certainly sold a lot of albums so her style and song choice is loved by many. I’m just not one of them.
I do love music though. Anna Graceman for example has been great. I’ve also loved a whole slew of past AGT singers like Julienne Irwin, Eli Mattson, and Jessica Price to just name a few.
We just all have different tastes it seems. That’s fine by me.
Yes, John, to answer your question, I think a lot of people really did like Susan’s performance on AGT last night because they did “get it”. Once you understand the song and the emotions behind the song, then you understand the performance. It’s not your usual little boppin’ hoppin’ stuff. You, of course, are entitled to your opinion. But, to call a performance terrible is overstating things a bit when you weren’t properly prepared for what you were watching. This is only one song from her album which I’m sure is going to be a blockbuster. Sorry you’re so negative, but when you listen to the entire album, you might change your mind.
John,
One thing you might consider is that, only on pre-orders and only after hearing one song, the CD is #11 on Amazon. That suggests that more people than “the Susan Boyle fan club” enjoyed it.
Also, check out the reviews from CBS News, Daily Mail, Digital Spy, Hollywood Gossip – heck, even Perez Hilton. A lot of people enjoyed the song. LA Times even complimented her “mellifluous voice.” So, there you go.
That being said, Susan Boyle clearly isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, just like Nikki Minaj isn’t. I found that terrible. So, that’s where I’m coming from.
It’s difficult to take you seriously, John, and for a couple of reasons. You say that “Susan Boyle was terrible on AGT” without arguing for your position, other than being boring, you don’t tell us what was terrible about it. And what’s with “she’d never have been invited if she hadn’t gotten so big on the stage before,” and the statement that “there are a ton of Susan Boyle fans out there that loved her performance.” If you want people to take you seriously you’re going to have to hone your writing skills and learn to present a valid argument. You bet you’re off base, buddy, and there really are a ton of fans out there who loved her performance and clearly you’re just trying to get a rise out of them.
I guess if I’m just trying to get a rise out of people, then it sounds like my writing style doesn’t need any adjustments. Whether you believe it or not, that wasn’t my intent.
It’s ok. 5500+ blog posts later, I’m pretty comfortable with my writing style.
You didn’t get a rise out of me John because there’s no way that performance was boring and you know that. Seriously. You might not have liked it, or the song, or Susan Boyle, but you know it was filled with raw emotion. If you knew what the song was about, you’d know that it was sung the way it’s supposed to be song. Unfortunately a lot of people who watch AGT probably aren’t into theatrical performances and therefore didn’t get it.
John, please ignore the fangirly posts – if Susan vomited on stage, they’d say it was beautiful. The melody is boring, her tempo was rushed throughout. Seems like at least 90% of Twitter agrees. The album version will be better, performance-wise. Still, at bottom the song isn’t very tuneful, and although it fits in with the musical’s narrative, for Susan it’s just another woe-is-me theme.
Regardless of opinions. I give Susan fans props for keeping the thread generally above board. Let’s keep it that way so I don’t have to close the thread.
John, I can’t believe we watched the same program! I thought Susan’s performance was absolutely breathtaking and mesmerizing, a new dimension to this lovely Scottish nightingale. I don’t belong to her fan club, but have purchased all her music to date as well as her book and have pre-ordered 50 copies of her new album. Susan Boyle is a refreshing change from the so-called “artists” of today who feel they have to prance around half naked to sell themselves because they really have no talent. Susan is the real McCoy, a nice unpretentious Lady with a glorious voice who sings to make people happy. She is the greatest vocalist to come along in decades, and reviews such as yours are unfair and unwarranted.
Jonathan,
What are you going to do with 50 copies of her new album?
“She is the greatest vocalist to come along in decades”
You really think she’s better than Andrea Bocelli or Josh Groban or other great singers?
Re Jonathan’s post,
As a Susan Boyle fan, I would say that “the greatest vocalist to come along in decades” is Placido Domingo. And for women, Stephanie Blythe or Celine Dion.
Now, the most effective communicator for certain emotions? That’s Susan Boyle. One of the most inspirational vocalists? Definitely Susan Boyle. She’s a whole package – voice, emotion, history – and that’s why her fans love her.
RE: Johnathon’s post.
Susan Boyle came along at the right time and has shown those doubters re her supposed 15 minutes of fame that her stunning singing voice will endure for as long as she wishes to continue to be a professional singer. Her rendition of,”You Have To Be There” on AGT was awe inspring. You either “get” Susan Boyle or you don’t.
John, you are not only off base, but you didn’t even show up for the game, my friend. Whatever feelings you may have inside you that becomes stirred by a great performance such as this, must have been on vacation somewhere. Susan delivered the performance of her life. With all her heart and soul. And no matter what critics try to say, she is here to stay. And I thank the heavens above for that. Maybe what you changed the channel to should be what you should stick to. As for me, whenever Susan performs, I will be glued to the set…. PEACE
The title you chose, John, clearly shows your intent. You could have done far better there unless your plan was to get lots of comments from SB fans. As to “Susan Boyle Fan Club” finding the article…just which one of the MANY fan sites would that be. And why are there so many Susan Boyle fan sites and millions of buyers for her albums. Seems to me it is because she doesn’t do the humdrum usual thing with a song, and this song on AGT continues her victory over humdrum, auto-tune, sleezey music. Oh, forgot to answer you….YES “anybody” liked it…loved it in fact and I’m part of that anybody.
The great thing about music is that no matter what you like, there is always something for everyone. I couldn’t even to begin to post negative comments on everything I don’t like. It would take forever! But Susan Boyle is one I do like. There is something about the woman and her music that touches my soul. So I will continue to listen to her and buy her CDs as well as the others that I like. And I will not try to put down those I don’t like, because they are just there for someone else.
I have not read all of the comments or anything, but I read some and felt the need to just chime in. I thought she totally tanked on the AGT the other night. I like her, I love her story, yada-yada…but she just sort of looked dead inside. And her stylist – is bi-polar. The dress was lovely and fit her silhouett nicely, but the hair…looked like a bad day at the toll booth kind of hair.
John I have no idea what you were listening to because Susan Boyle “nailed it” beautifully on AGT. Finally, the world has someone with an incredible voice and style. Susan also has something that most performers will never have.CLASS! She is one person who didn’t let fame go to her head. Susan Boyle could sing the phone book and it would be great! Listen up next time and you just might be amazed at what you hear.
I know everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I just can’t understand why the prevailing thought in the world these days is, “How can I trash someone else?” Does this make you feel better about yourself??
You’re not off base. It’s time for this 15 minutes of fame to be over. As a musician, I recognize a similar problem she shares with a lot of amateurs. She is not able to make sense of a song’s rhythm and if it is at all nuanced she gets really lost. Often she will rush the melody ahead of the rhythm and have to slow down so it will catch up. Her vibrato is choppy and awkward. And the song choice – UGH! This is a great song when sung by the original “Kristina”, Helen Sjoholm. But the song was way too big and emotional for her to handle and it sounded very drab and dreary. She has no stage presence. She was merely a novelty. Let’s move on now. For all your adoring fans that say our ears are broken, sorry. You are the ones who do not have your ears tuned properly and apparently know very little about singing or music. Have a nice day.
John, I think I understand what you’re saying. I am a HUGE SuBo fan, but I think the problem was the song. It was a difficult song & I was a bit disappointed too. Sometimes on AGT that will happen. Like a person will give several fabulous performances & then they’ll come back with a horrible song and end up getting voted off.
I love the people that consider this post tearing someone down. I think I said some very nice things about Susan in the post. I just didn’t like her performance on AGT. She was on a show I enjoy and she made me not like it quite as much. That’s a commentary on what happened on the show. It wasn’t about tearing her down.
I agree with John… Susan Boyle is a good story/good voice but she doesn’t really excite me/didn’t excite me the other night. She deserves recognition definitely but she isn’t my cup of tea.
Hey John,
This time, I AGREE 100% with you on the performance, and this is not knocking down Susan Boyle, I do love her beautiful voice, but there seemed to be something lacking in the performance, perhaps she was stressed out or something, not really sure.
I am a die-hard OPERA fan and do love my OPERA singers, but this particular performance did not do anything for me and my husband who loves her, when he heard the beginning of the song, he quickly curled up on the couch and had a nap. That I think speaks for itself.
Nobody is knocking Susan Boyle, and I am so happy that John’s post produced so much interest in Susan Boyle, but at least the Susan Boyle Fan Club is alive and well, and found this post as you so correctly stated, dearest John. You must be so much fun at a party and perhaps your posts in future, need to be in that same vain.
Take care
Angelheart
Carol,
Wow, you agree with me for once;-)
I’m not sure how much fun I am at a party or not, but you can be sure a party with me will be memorable.
Hi again John,
Thanks for sending me the link for this post about Susan Boyle, I am not very computer savvy, so need some help now an again, sure appreciate it.
Loved the comment about me agreeing with you. Hey I am not above being incorrect, it happens all of the time – after all – I AM HUMAN… Isn’t it amazing that I agree with you for once;-) All of the acts on AGT are very subjective to the different people watching it and I still look forward to the show.
I will not hop onto the Daniel Joseph Baker wagon anymore, I have grown up and now will move on and whatever happens, will happen, regardless of what I say or think.
Now, I say bring on “X-Factor”, can hardly wait. I will need to do some wicked taping of the shows. Our son is coming home from Japan right when the show begins, so I may not be able to be here to comment on that show, but I will be baaaaaaaaackkk…..
Angelheart
If you’re looking forward to X Factor, be sure to check out my other site: http://www.purexfactor.com I’m interested to see how that show does.
I looked up her performance to see if anyone else realized how atrocious it was. The song was boring, her voice was not that great. She seemed to miss a lot of notes. The instumetals on the song were crap. It needed a lot more than what it had to be the emotional powerhouse that most people on this page are claiming it was. It’s sad that people are buying SuBo’s crap when a lot of really good musicians aren’t getting anything. :/
Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone recalls the format for the finals for AGT. I do know that they get dwindled down to 5 finalists, but is this the last week or the second last week, not really sure how it went last year.
Thanks
Angelheart
Let me prefac, I enjoy so much Susan Boyle and the song was powerful but her personality, and personna, was like she was singing for the first time. Her hands – she didn’t know what to do with them. Her facial expressions were weird. It was like she was petrified. Her new look is cold, and she was cold. We are used to a warmth about her. When Nick Cannon went to get her a hug at the end there was nothing. In fact, I think he was caught off guard.
hey, John found ya u sexy thing, lol…. I don’t know what every one is in a tizzy for, I was really l@@king forward to Susan Boyle sing but boy was she way off base and out of tune , she won because of her beautiful voice and I was really taken aback when i head her do what she i felt it was not her and sounded awful. she should stick to her opera, the other gendres are not good for her voice I think.
but that’s just what i think. boy i can’t wait til this season is over and they can give them jugdes a time out. they need time to learn how adults act and how t.v. judges need to be profesonal people who respet 1 another. Geez my fingers r sure long winded.oops sorry if I got ona soap box :)~ I’ll be checking out ur site 4 x factor, it looks pretty intense from comercial ads I’m seen. bye 4 now, gotta go do my voting.
I’m liking you more and more sandy…lol
I agree that I’ll be glad when the judges bickering is over. I don’t mind them disagreeing. That’s fine and should happen. However, they don’t have to get personal with so many things like they have this year.
I am not fan of the song, but I thought Susan Boyle’s performance was very emotional. So it wasn’t my favorite of her performances and I’d probably not go buy a CD based on that performance but I enjoyed enough on tv. Just not enough to spend my money.
@John “Reminds me of when I went to see Les Miserables in NYC. If my friend wouldn’t have prepared me properly, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it nearly as much as I did.”
I guess you aren’t a fan of French literature. I read the book for the first time when I was 12 (ok, I was skipping over most of long historical sections back then), and when the musical first came out I was very skeptical how this long and serious novel can be presented in a musical. But surprisingly, the musical managed to cover the basic plot very closely and told some of the back story of the characters in songs. I always find it funny how so many people in the US don’t know that Les Miserables is based on probably the most important French novel of the 19th century. If you really want to understand the story of Les Miserables, consider reading the book. Get a non-anbridged version: then it’s your choice if you want to read all historical sections or skip over some of them and not somebody else’s.
kitty,
Definitely not a french literature fan. Most of my reading these days is online, but I do enjoy getting caught up in a great book. Unfortunately, far too many books don’t reach the heights of great. Les Miserables is one that might reach that height. Just no time with all I’m doing along with my backlog of books I’d like to read.
I agree with you John, her performance was terrible. I listened to the first 30 seconds of her bellowing and fast-forwarded through the rest before my ears started bleeding. Snooze.
I agree with some ppl. Susan Boyle sure was in tense, but made me lesser of fan with the song she sang. I don’t care how many of u make excuses 4 her and the ” meaning” of the words etc, etc. just face it, the song choice wasn’t good and she did a lousey job, end of story. and I don’t need any 1 commenting ” putttung” me in my place as others would like to think educating me on a song that just wasn’t right 4 the singer and i don’t give a care what any 1 thinks of my opinon, geeez get over it, it was just 1 of the many flubs singers make.
