America’s Got Talent Semi Final Review
I was going to do a review of the acts from tonight’s semi final episode, but then I saw that Jason had already done so in the comments of another post. So, I’ll just share his comments for all to see and to comment on. Thanks Jason!
Tonight was interesting…started strong, got weak in the middle, then finished amazingly. My thoughts:
Anna & Patryk – It was a very good routine. Their movements are so precise, and it was a great song choice and theme. They should be in the finals.
Christina & Ali – It’s a great story, but I don’t think the singing is good enough. I like them when they sing alone, but not together. It’s probably over for them.
Antonio Restivo – A really nice trick, but I wasn’t really amazed during it. I still really like about him, and I think he could be in the finals.
Future Funk – The cuteness is wearing off, and they tried too much to make a story out of it. The older kid had a nice break dance, but the rest was only ok. They’re probably not going to advance.
Taylor Matthews – I don’t know what to make of him. He’s good, but not the best singer. He should lose the backup singers, his voice gets lost in them. Maybe he could make it to the finals.
Connor Doran – Another nice story, but the act didn’t take it up a notch. He definitely should have stuck to the quieter, more reflective music. I like him, but he’s probably done.
Dan Sperry – Are you serious with that trick? I had a flashback to season 2 with the magician Kevin James. I know that there’s some imagination to magic, but we generally know it’s fake and don’t need an obvious way to see that. At least throw up some fake blood or something to make it more believable. I cannot see him advancing at all.
Kristina Young – What was she thinking? If she had livened the song up and went to a pop version after stepping down from the piano, she might have had a shot. However, she didn’t, and completely blew it.
ArcAttack – I was skeptical that they could make the act better, but they did. I still see them as a long shot to win with some of the other acts still active, but they could be in the finals.
Michael Grimm – I don’t think he’s the best singer, but there’s still something I like about him. He’s probably in the finals.
AscenDance – The same as Connor, they should have stayed with the slower, peaceful music. It was nice, but I don’t think it was enough.
Prince Poppycock – Do I need to say anything? I guess I should. I couldn’t stop laughing during this act. Perfect song choice, perfect concept, it was a perfect act. It is going to be tough to top that in the finals. He’s the only slam dunk to make it through of the night.
I think Prince Poppycock, Anna & Patryk, ArcAttack, and Michael Grimm advance by America’s vote. Antonio Restivo and Taylor Matthews finish 5 and 6, and the judges take Antonio to the finals.
John’s Thoughts: I still love Christina and Ali. I can vote for story if I like:-) I think Taylor Matthews also has more of a chance than people are giving him. I also think that Michael Grimm is a sure thing to get through along with Poppycock. Does anyone else want to hear from the other female climber on Acendance? She’s incredibly attractive. Just saying.
prince poppycock killed it last night, he was by far the best of the night the rest of the acts were only mediocre, the song choice ended up burning 3 of the acts (conner doran, Kristina Young, and AscenDance)
Ok, is it just me or is anyone else hip to and/or sick of the fake 2 to 3 vote for the judges picks? It’s always one judge votes for one act, then another votes for the other remaining act and the third judge gives the deciding vote. I believe that in actuality, the 3 of them pick the one act they want to put through but to add phony suspense and also not to hurt the other act’s feelings, they pretend that it is a split vote. I can remember in past shows that Piers picked an act and then the very next judge, whether it be the Hoff or Sharon would also pick the same act and the decision would be made with only 2 judges weighing in. Sometimes they even announced that it was a unanimous decision.
This method of each act getting one judge’s vote and then the last one making the deciding vote is getting old. Nobody will ever convince me that Kite Boy ever had a chance with the judges over the two girls.
It amazed me that Antonia got less votes than Connor though.
Strange and interesting season this year.
Sorry, I meant to say the fake 2 to 1 vote in the first sentence of my comment above.
I agree. Although, I think that Sharon’s been totally fake and scripted this year. I’ve been meaning to do a post on it. She’s looking down so she can read what she is suppose to say. Sad.
That said, at least they got it right and sent my girls through!
Well, results are in and I would’ve agreed with John, almost completely, right down the line, but, apparently, America hasn’t much taste.
Prince Poppycock: absolutely a no brainer. That guy knocked it out of the park last night.
Anna & Patryk are fabulous dancers, but I, myself, simply wouldn’t pay good money to go see two tweenies dancing ballroom. For free is one thing, to pay, quite another.
ArcAttack was my big shocker. I though, for certain, that they would make it through.
Same with Antonio Restivo. Are there two more perfect Las Vegas acts or what? Apparently, America didn’t quite pick up on that concept.
And, after all that foolishness of losing ArcAttack and Antonio Restivo, I was deeply concerned for Michael Grimm, but thank god he made it through.
Finally, I detest pop music, but I don’t really have a problem with Taylor Matthews making it through because he IS so commercial and would probably do very well with a good producer and mixer and, isn’t that what this show is for anyway? To hopefully make professional successses out of the winner?
I was so glad that Antonio was voted off. Mostly because it left room for my girls. Plus, let’s be honest that ArcAttack and Antonio didn’t play that well on TV> ArcAttack was cool the first time, but was also getting quite boring. Even the inner nerd in me can only see a tesla coil so many times. At least Antonio’s eyebrows almost became even by the end of the show. The problem is how much of it was Antonio’s skills and how much was the producers who helped him? That’s my biggest potential knock on Antonio.
Oh, and oops. Forgot to mention Christina and Ali. Darling little girls. Sad stories all around. But, and I don’t remember who is who, but, last night, the little girl was sooooooooooooo off-key and flat and out of sync and just all-around bad. I’m sorry. It’s a sin, I know, to say bad things about cute little girls with cystic fibrosis, but….. it’s true. They really just aren’t that good of singers. And pity shouldn’t be the reason they win. Sorry.
No sin involved in expressing your thoughts like that. Although, I wouldn’t say that I like them out of pity. I’d say I like them out of love for their personalities and for their ability to overcome. I’m going to post something shortly about this.
Sorry John but I agree the girls weren’t that good. They were better than they had been in the past though, so I’ll give them that, and they are more entertaining that Conor too. Once Michael, Poppycock, and Anna and Patryk got through I didn’t care about the others, since most of my faves are in the next semifinal. I was happy Taylor got through though since I thought the judges were too hard on him. And I know you will all think I’m crazy, but I really liked Kristina. The judges were way too hard on her, especially since the song choice may have been the producers’ fault (same with Ascendance and Conor as well). Plus I like the slow version of the song- it was similar to the one on Glee I thought. Antonio I thought would get through if it came down to him and another act but since he didn’t get top 3 on his night and had to wait for the judges’ vote I figured he wasn’t going to get through. His act is all show and no substance, imo. And ArcAttack is boring on TV.
Melissa,
I actually agree with you about Kristina. I was enjoying the performance. It was sexy and sultry and I enjoyed it. Show’s you how much I listen to Lady Gaga, but I didn’t even recognize the song until she got the chorus. Plus, I hate that she didn’t get to finish. That sucks!
I think America dropped the ball this week. Of the last three acts called to the stage the only act with actual talent got voted off. Say what you want about Antonio Restivo but which of those three are you more likely to go to Vegas to see? Sure the other two acts tug at your heart strings but the show is called America’s Got “Talent” not America’s Got Sweet Sob Stories.
Actually, I’d rather see Christina and Ali than Antonio. Antonio had no real substance to his production. The magic wasn’t very good and all he had was the fire. I’d go watch fire, but I don’t necessarily need him even on stage.
I a coocoo for Prince Poppycock! I think Jackie is an angel! I wanted Alice-I call her Precious’s momma to make it, but she did not! So sorry to the ones who did not make it to the top ten! Thank you for listening to my comments.
I am coocoo- I bet you got that. My m key is sticking so im correcting it. thank you.
i still can’t get over it having michael grimm win. it was clear to me that jackie is the real winner of the show. even michael grasso was far head a talent than grimm. the show is RIGGED i think.
