Reactions to America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Week
I’ve been getting a lot of messages from people about last night’s America’s Got Talent Las Vegas week decisions. I think that’s a very good sign for the show. If it’s completely quiet, then that means that people don’t care. Here’s some of the comments I was sent…
From Betty & Jerry…
Judges made mistakes tonight 2 people were sent to hollywood and should have been sent home 1. the woman who yodles 2. the guy who pretends he’s a magician We would be ticked if we paid money and this is the talent we got. Neither of these people even warrant $5.00 ticket. YOU SENT THE YOUNG FELLOW FROM PUERTO RICO HOME. Big time mistake. THIS GUY HAS TALENT AND HIS VOICE WARANTS THE GOING VEGAS SHOW RATE. Not much you can do about the 2 disasters you sent through BUT YOU CAN CALL THE PUERTO RICO SINGER BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are retired professionals living about 6-7 months a year in our Huntington Beach CA home. Caesars Palace was a client during my professional career interfacing with top management in Century City. Both Hollywood and Vegas entertainment has been and continues to be a big part of our lives – it brings lots of enjoyment. VEGAS IS GENERALLY OUR CHOICE CITY FOR NEW YEARS. BRING THE YOUNG MAN TO HOLLYWOOD.
I agree about the yodle lady being a mess and I have no clue why she went through. They definitely took the wrong magician too. I’ll write a post about this later. What a travesty indeed! Same with the Puerto Rican singer. He was far from perfect, but better than that other freak show guy. Ugh!
From Sylvia…
I can’t believe they sent the kite flyer home and kept the Old Painted Lady that cannot sing. That is just a miscarriage of there judging abilities and almost makes me want to quick watching the show. There were so many acts that were 100 times better than she was and it makes no sense why they kept her. This is suppose to be a talent show. She did not even stay within the 90 seconds which they said was something that is an automatic disqualification. What are they thinking?????????
The “Old Painted Lady” I LOVE IT!! I’m not sure how much control the judges had versus the producers. I can’t help but wonder if they didn’t just do it for the effect. No doubt she won’t make it through the audience voting. She’s awful. The only good part to her act was when she was “hitting” on Nick and seeing his reaction.
From Rin…
Tonight they showed the elimination round for the 48 spots. The judges eliminated a young singer, I believe his last name was Aponti that had a beautiful voice. They put thru the woman with wild red hair and horrendous make up. She also sang and banged on a piano. They shattered this young mans dreams and put this crazy person thru. Why in the hell do they do this. It is so unfair and not funny at all. I hope more people complain about this because as they are always saying, “IT IS ABOUT TALENT’ then they go and do something stupid like tonight. Please fix this. make this show what it is supposed to be. I am so angry with all of the judges.
As you can see from this post, you’re not alone. Carlos Aponte is his name and I wouldn’t be too concerned about him. Not making the show might be the best thing that happened to him. Then, he’s not under their contract. It’s just unfortunate since I would have much rather seen him perform on the show than a number of other acts.
From Matthew…
Americas got talents will never be watched again withing my house hold. Due to the shame shameful choices to the finals of the entire episode in Vegas 2010. Dont know who two britsh twits thinks they are they dont know talent and select there nazi friends over AMERICAN talent. And for Howie is a shame your no longer a canadian with taste, talent, humor.
Ok, let’s not bring race/ethnicity/nationality into this. It’s just not a factor (or at least one worth discussing). Plus, let’s not have the judges take the full brunt of the blow. I’m sure the producers are involved as well. Also, every year there’s a group of people that say they’re done watching this show based on their decisions. I don’t think that will ever change. It’s an impossible job which is guaranteed to make people angry. Yet, it still leads the summer ratings and people still watch it since the talent that does make it is fun to watch.
From Elena…
about 5 or 6 acts that are not suppose to make it to Hollywood…the man in black suit…the comedian, he is not funny at all…next is the lady that plays the piano and can not sing…the other was the hand singing old lady…she might have a heart attack on stage…the magician…funny but not worth of my money to watch him in Vegas…the girl black girl that looks like Rihanna…can really sing and the best singer out of all the singers there…i can not believe she did not make it…come on judges…wake up already…you are putting in the people that we do not want to see…if this is how u pick…i will never watch that show again…
Hmmm…an old lady having a heart attack on a live show. I wonder what that would do for ratings. I agree with you about the Rhianna look alike. She was a good singer and should have been put through. Although, I think the guy singers have it this year and not the girls. Although, the singing sisters are still my favorite. They better make it or else.
stupid to keep old red headed lady and not the good singer from Peurto Rico!!
It also ridiculous that they put through the 70 y.o. old hand whistling lady. Who wants to go to Vegas to see that? Let alone PAY to see it. Are you serious?!!
What about the magicians? I think that the sleight of hand guy should have went through over the blond guy and the comedian- magician
I can not belive that the Judges have put through such idiodic non- talent as seen in Mary Ellen and Sally, the hand whistler and would send home such magnificant talent as Carlos Avantie and April Lane! Is this a search for talent or the most rediculous and non-talent people??? Maybe it is time that the show gets some new Judges. I will give credit where credit is due and Morgan Pierce is correct when he commented to the other two judges that Carlos and April had real talent and the other two should not go through. I believe that the judges should reconsider Carlos and April and send them on to Hollywood!!!!!
@Jonah
I agree completely. The blond guy was a joke and shouldn’t have gone through. I could have done what the blonde guy did. I’ll be posting more on this soon.
@Raymond Yong
Maybe they’ll do an about face like before and let a few more in. It is a shame!
What happened to the two sisters that had cystic fibrosis? I couldnt spot them and they were definatley waaayy better than the blond with the pitchy voice that got through to hollywood!
@Mary
I was surprised we didn’t see them at all either. I imagine we’ll get to see them on the show tonight. They’re my personal favorites, so they better make it to Hollywood.
The apparent goal of the show is supposedly to produce someone entertaining enough to put on a Vegas show; in other words a true star. However the judges seem blind to this criteria and chose at least two bizarre and pathetically talentless people, destroying the hopes of more worthy entertainers. Are the judges seriously telling us that a 70ish ex-teacher can sustain a Las Vegas audience with her hand flute? Or that people would pay to see that grotesque elderly, tone deaf, supposed singer??
This was the dumbest most ridiculous thing I have seen in my life. An obviously extremely talented young man is sent home while keeping some of the stupidest acts imaginable… yea, I’m upset.. upset is not the word.. I’m really pissed that this young man was denied the opportunity to shine… by the way.. last night was the last time I will ever watch that show.. now I don’t care who wins or lose.. ridiculous!
Sally,
Maybe they’ll go to group B tonight and not find enough talent and so they’ll decide to bring Carlos or someone back.
I was also extremely surprised in them sending Carlos home. He may not be ready for the Met (but then nobody on AGT is or ever was), but he was still very very talented and way better than other singers in “classical” category – and had on this show in the past – as well as most of the people that got through. I guess his mistake was not to get dressed in some funny costume.
I see two possibilities. Either they are going to have a wild card again and bring him back – remember Braswell whom they also eliminated in Vegas – or they really don’t want a singer in the finals again or another (p)opera singer as a winner.
Also, they may be doing it on purpose so that we can never be sure of who goes through. Last year they also eliminated a number of favorites and let a number of crazy acts through. At that time there were also zillion complaints, threats to never watch the show again. Maybe they like controversy.
What happened to the singer from last night that was the last act? He had a great voice and the judges loved him. I couldn’t imagine him being in group B.
For the America’s Got Talent 3 judges:
X X X You three are a No Go.
Carlos Aponte is very talented with a great voice. For me, I will not watch your show again.
kitty,
I was waiting for you to join the conversation about Carlos and the “opera” singers. None of them are really very good. I would have sent them all home except Carlos. However, the shock value is better as they did it (as you can see from the comments).
This is the last time I watch this show, when that joke in a clown suit, made it through as a singer and Carlos was sent home convinced me that the shows mentality is sub zero.
So wrong to send home the “Homeless Veterans and keep the “crazy no talent Red Haired woman” , the “I’ll be back” guy or the “Air Band”.. Yes , all 3 made me laugh, but for pure talent as this is suppose to be a show about.. then , not only do the Vets have talent.. but, for goodness sake, to turn them away after all they have done for our country and to be one time homeless and now said no to , letting these other no-talent acts go through.. It just is not right!! I hope the American people get on the band wagon and bring the ‘Vets” back !!! What an insult to them!!
[…] Here’s a sample of the comments people have sent me (plus check out the ones I posted previously): […]
@john – yep, I never expect much from “opera” singers on these shows, but it’s always fun to comment on it, plus it gets people interested in opera.
I am also surprised about young pianist – he had talent, and he wasn’t a singer, why did they send him home? But as you said, they like shock value. I thought Poppycock butchered La donna e’ mobile, but maybe he was sick… There were many weird decisions not just (p)opera singers. I swear I sing and play piano better than the old lady they let through, not that it’s much of a challenge. Maybe I should dress in some funny costume and try it. Nope, I’d rather keep my day job.
Off topic (sorry): did you have a chance to see Carmen on PBS – I thought, you’d have loved it, singers sang well, looked great, acted well and the production featured lots of nice touches and dance sequences. If you missed it, consider going to Met summer HD encores at a movie theater that shows it near you, they have Carmen on July 28th – I can bet money you’d enjoy this one, lots of people who don’t normally care for opera liked it.
Also off topic, I think you’d like this video – Opera company of Philadelphia doing “flash opera” at Reading Terminal Market:
kitty,
What they didn’t show on TV for the piano player was that he missed a few notes in his Las Vegas performance. Piers even called him out after his performance. I heard it too. So, that might have contributed to him not making it.
I also hhung out with Poppycock some in Vegas and he definitely was having some voice issues. Although, I thought his performance didn’t show that he was having issues. I think he did about as well as he could have done.
I love “Flash” videos. They’re awesome.
the talent the show picked this year really STINKS out loud.my husband tony russo-who has a great voice was not picked for this and he would be embaressed!but he got alot of views.GET WITH IT.SHARON RUSSO
# Mary Ward commented on July 9th, 2010: Please forgive me, but I just started watching the show—-busy life and missed the previous. Sharon is the ticket to my motivation. However, I am appalled at the choices, auditorium chaos appearing like a circus, and approach to filming each act of entertainment.
1. Clearly I am not the only one that perceived choices to be horrific in some cases. Are we catering to an extravaganza that excludes an average intelligence per the audience? Are we discrediting the judges by their choices? Please> Help me on this one.
2. The original audition process in auditoriums where people scream and flail their arms around uncontrollably- echos and all- appeared like a circus with extremely low class quality- the opposite end of American Idol. Why not do the first auditions, all over, in private. Then, like American Idol—when you get closer to the count down—- do the audience cheers in a classy stage with sound control? Just a thought.
3. What is the filming directive about? Why the choppy shifting back and forth from the judges, to audience, to backstage competitors? I cannot even enjoy the quality talent- that has appeared- doing their art? It is too choppy and confusing, as well as, frustrating. We are watching the talent—– Please!!!!!!!!
That being said, – Mr. Cannon is important with his back stage interactions to talent. He is adorable, ads some personal humor/flavor, and is quite entertaining — with class.
Finally——-
Please allow the appropriate talent to move through into finals? The horrendous choices you all made were clearly catored to a circus audience mentality. Class it up more please? There is a way to bring enough mix of flavor which pulls in all audiences. I question this on your show.
Quit the constant shift on cameras back and forth from one thing to another besides the watch of talent. Come on? Class it up a little please? Sensationalism of this sort is out there definately portraying circus quality.
If producers from American Idol are directing this show – the executive producer (Simon) to name a few- they are way. Simon you should know better.
If producers from American Idol are directing this show – the executive producer (Simon) to name a few- they are way off. Simon you should know better.
@Mary Ward – a lot of people agree with you on all points. The audience screaming, the filming not showing the contestants, bizarre judges decision – this was part of this show from the start – although as far as I remember season 1 was better. People complain and complain, but I guess as long as ratings are good, the producers feel they don’t need to make any changes.
SYTYCD has so much more class, but as long as AGT gets better ratings, the producers will continue thinking that they are doing great.
BRING BACK THE GIFTED KITE BOY!!! He’s not only talented, but his performance is UNIQUE and certainly worthy of payment at a Las Vegas show! This is the 1st season I’ve watched AGT and the decision to send him home (and keep some others, no hate, just about the talent here) makes me not care about the rest of the season!! Someone email me if they call him back; otherwise I won’t WMT:) Where is the voice of the American people? I’m just sayin’…look at the comments.
Worthy of Vegas might be a stretch. I can’t imagine paying vegas prices to watch him fly his kites. I’ve really enjoyed it on the show and it’s even better in person (I was at his Las Vegas audition), but not for an entire Vegas show.
That said, he’s still better than a number of the acts that went through.
The good thing is that the voice of the American people will start in Hollywood. The problem is that sometimes America is really dumb too and keeps people like Kevin Skinner last season.
Voice issues and opera quality aside, I love Prince Poppycock. I would pay to see him at a show – I think he and Fighting Gravity are the two most entertaining acts on the show. Both are close enough to things i”ve seen before to prevent me from being confused but with enough of a twist to keep me entertained. I also liked the slight-of-hand magician best out of that group and was sad to see him go while the blond moved on.
I am so, so very disappointed with the Judges’ rulings last night. Carlos Aponti definitely should have gone through. How insulting and stupid that they sent him home and kept the crazy clown-makeup lady who went way over time, couldn’t play the piano or sing. She was awful. Additionally, they blew it on the magician choices as well. The slight-of-hand magician definitely should have gone through as well. Their judging has just descended into whose stories they liked and not about talent. The Judges have shown their extreme lack of talent with these selections.
