Thoughts on First 5 America’s Got Talent 2011 Finalists
Time for some thoughts on the 5 acts making it into the America’s Got Talent Season 6 finals. Please share your thoughts in the comments below.
Lys Agnes – I’m not much of a fan of Lys Agnes at all, but AGT viewers seem to like the operatic type of voice for some reason. So, she has a chance. Although, I’d say it’s probably a small chance. Doesn’t hurt that AGT is propping her up in the production of the show. I do wish she’d go back to the braided hair. The braids were sweet.
Miami All Stars – What an exciting group to watch. Their semi final act had some really amazing non-stop action. I’m afraid that they’re probably going to slip in the finals and not be quite as explosive and interesting. They’ll have an enjoyable performance, but not likely enough to win.
PopLyfe – I still feel like Piers was right in the beginning that the lead singer of PopLyfe is the star. Sure, the rest of the band has been an interesting package. The band without the lead singer might have even made it to the quarterfinals on their own. However, the lead singer is really truly the star. Her voice is fantastic. If they stop worrying about propping up the band and highlight her awesome vocals, they have a great chance of winning.
Team iLuminate – Incredible group. Unbelievable mix of technology and dancing. If they don’t win, it will be because America is lazy. However, they are so incredibly good that they might still win even with America’s laziness.
West Springfield Dance Team – This team should just enjoy their final performance. They’ve been the last one in for too many weeks in a row. So, they have basically no shot of winning it all based on just a popularity vote. That’s ok though. They’ll enjoy their final performance and bring something interesting to the show. Their choreographers need to do a group routine on SYTYCD.
Did anyone else notice that 2 singers and 3 dance groups made it through to the AGT Finals? Obviously America loves music and dancing. It should be obvious. We have dedicated dance (SYTYCD, ABDC, DWTS) and music (AI, The Voice, X Factor) reality TV shows. Sucks to be a variety act going up against something that America loves so much.
For musicians… there’s currently no show which allows Bands, eliminating POPLYFE, and all of the music shows focus on pop/pop rock/pop country music, so people like Lys Agnes and Landau E. Murphy wouldn’t stand a chance on those shows.
And as for Dance… America’s Best Dance Crew is far less watched than AGT and seems to (from what I can see) focus on hip-hop. SYTYCD focuses on solo dancing. And all of these shows (except the X Factor, which is new) have an age minimum… so really AGT pretty much takes the acts which can’t fit in on their respective shows.
Though, it is certainly hard for the variety acts to make it – but that’s probably because the 90-second performance doesn’t really work for a lot of the variety acts as well as it does for singing and dance. Magicians have to do show-enders every round or else they are told they “didn’t step it up;” but there are only so many “show-ending” illusions to be performed. Danger acts have a tendency to get repetitive quickly; the only danger act that’s been really successful on the show has been Jeremy VanSchoonhoven, who stepped up the danger and set each performance. A good dangerous act would have a lot more set up which would make them more entertaining anyway. And jugglers just have a bad tendency to make that ONE mistake that kills them.
About the only “variety act” which actually has an advantage from the 90-second time frame is The Kinetic King… but America doesn’t love him THAT much.
Aww, I love The Kinetic King. ^_^
Anyway, I have to partially disagree with the assessment of both Piers and John regarding Poplyfe. I enjoy them as a band, and do think they have a fair shake at this competition. However, I don’t find the lead singer to be strong ENOUGH to have made it through on her own, and their performance of “Come Together” really showcased their cohesion, in my opinion. It’s not every day a band, let alone one so young, can perform a Beatles song and go so far to make it their own.
hi HOW ARE YOU i also want to participate in america got talent 2012 for dance but i don’t know where i will apply for this!!!please tell me about this process and if possible so email me its my mail address princess_anum2000@yahoo.com
JB,
You’re right that it is one of the only outlets for these singers. However, their success on the show is still an example of how much America loves music and dancing.
R.J. Rouge,
I love the Kinetic King as well (Nerds Unite!)
The band did quite well on Come Together. Although, I think the lead singer of Poplyfe has a lot more in her than what that song showed. Of course, the producers would have probably given her some crap song that would have ruined her. So, maybe it’s better that she’s in the band.
Anum,
You should check out the official AGT audition website: http://americasgottalentauditions.com/
I wanted a young girl who was dancing to go through…
I liked Lys Agnes Ave Maria, but she lost me after that.
If a singer wins, I hope it’s Landau.
iLuminate is da bomb! I think they were the best out of this group!
Hey John long time no see ( at least virtually). I just started graduate school but had a two week break that finally allowed me to catch up on AGT!
I also do not get the appeal of Lys. Her audition was excellent but since then I think she has been getting votes because of that audition and her sob story.
The other act I don’t get is PopLyfe. I’m sorry but the lead singer is not that good. It seems like she misses notes at times but is never called out on it. The band is still good but not as good as the judges say in my opinion.
In fact, when it came down to Beth Ann, West Springfield, and Daniel, I thought I would rather see those three acts in the finals than PopLyfe, Lys, and Miami All Stars. The All Stars are great, but I get bored watching that kind of dance compared to more contemporary routines like Beth Ann’s and West Springfield’s. (I also really enjoyed Fatally Unique in Vegas and while I didn’t love their performance in the last live show I am holding out hope for them). Daniel’s Edge of Glory was also the only performance this season that I have wanted to watch over and over again so I was greatly disappointed when the judges picked the dancers over him. I was so sure they would pick him too since he had a better chance to win than the dancers do.
With all the time and energy celebrities put in, I would think they’d get paid something. Or does their salaries go to charities? Even ones eliminated first work for weeks sacrifice time for this. Is is strictly for publicity?.
X my fingers. I would like to see Landau, win or at least be runner up. Lys was good 1st time but she started but omg, did she sound awful last week, ( she looked awful too ) my votès r on landau, sum of the acts I did not think got justice because they were the kind you have to see in person to appeciate. Landau still my fav. hi ya John 😉
