America’s Got Talent 2011 Video

I just can’t help myself. I have to post all the America’s Got Talent preview videos. I can’t wait to see the variety of talent that they bring again this year. Yes, it’s my summer guilty pleasure for sure. That and So You Think You Can Dance.

Now how many opera wannabees would we have this season… Just kidding, it should be fun. BTW – I’ve been following Jackie and I fell in love with her voice much more so than at AGT. She improved a lot since AGT, gorgeous tone of voice. She is classical crossover not opera now, but I do think she has a voice to pursue opera and become great an it if she changes her mind.
As usual, we’ll have conflict between AGT and SYTYTD on Wednesdays, so it’s SYTYTD for me.
A bit off topic. Just stumbled on this Arcadian Broad video, though I’d share:

Wonder if he wants to pursue contemporary or ballet he seems to be doing both now.
kitty,
I’m sure they’ll have at least 1 or 2. Although, I’d be fine if they gave them this season off.
I’m still calling Jackie opera;-) She’s so young, she could do so many different things. I’m glad her parents seem to be pacing her.
Yes, there is a conflict and I take SYTYCD first. Did you know I have this site too: http://www.puresytycd.com In fact, SYTYCD was the first TV show I blogged about.
I’ll have to post the video of Arcadian. Thanks for sharing.
I am always conflicted when it comes to opera wannabees on the tv talent shows. On the one hand they are really not good, on the other hand they get people interested in opera. I wonder why they never have ballet contestants. Maybe because people recognize bad ballet more readily than bad opera.
Jackie is probably the only one who has a real operatic potential, and the great one too. I wouldn’t call her opera yet since singing a role on opera stage is very different from singing an aria with a mic – it’s a bit like calling Susan Boyle a “Broadway performer” because she sang “I dream a dream”. But… Jackie’s is really a major talent in whichever career she chooses, probably the most talented contestant ever to grace a Got Talent competition.
I knew you had SYTYTD blog, but haven’t had a chance to check it out. To me SYTYTD is the best competitive reality show on tv. It has everything – contestants that are both talented and had training, expert judges, excellent choreographers, emphasis on talent rather than sob stories.
I thought you’d find Arcadian video interesting. I did some checking, and he won this competition in contemporary division and was 2nd after some girl in the classical division. I was browsing ballet videos on you tube – after a long break from watching ballet, I got an ABT subscription this year, started watching ballet videos on you tube – and stumbled on it.
Talking about ballet, I wonder why we never get ballet dancers on AGT; maybe because more people could see problems with ballet than with opera. But imagine someone like this little girl on AGT:
Not sure how it worked. I copied/pasted the link just like in other videos, but if with other videos it was only a URL in the comment, this time the whole video got included.
It’s the power of something called oembed. It will convert some links into the embed from just the link. Pretty cool huh?
I love SYTYCD. In fact, it’s how I started blogging about TV.
Ballet I think would not do well on AGT. Unless it was a cute kid like you show. Then, the cute kid factor might come through.
Cool. Is there a way to control which links get converted and which didn’t?
You are probably right about ballet. But then nobody would’ve thought singing opera arias would do well. It’d be funny to see if bad ballet would’ve gotten the same “wows” from the judges as bad aria-singing does. Imagine Neal Boyd’s ballet equivalent.
Re: who is or isn’t opera singer. You are thinking about opera as singing style, when in fact it is a profession just like a musical theater actor/singer is a profession. An opera singer is someone who makes a living primarily from singing roles in operas, this is why they are called “opera singers”, just like musical theater actors are people who perform roles in musicals not sing “Memory” or “I dream a dream” in concerts, no matter how great a particular performance of “Memory” might be. In terms of style of singing – opera utilizes classical style of singing that was developed long before microphones were invented and that enables voice to be heard without microphones.
But… there are other genres that utilize classical style of singing e.g. chamber music like singing lieder/art songs in chamber music recitals, oratorios, or classical musical theater like Show Boat or Sound of Music. Opera has higher vocal demands on voice range/technique/strength as opposed to chamber music (even though opera singers do sing lieder concerts) or musical theater as the music itself is more demanding (“O mio babbino caro” is really the simplest aria there is, also recitatives that no crossover singer sings is often more difficult than arias), more singing is required in a single performance and the orchestras over which singer is supposed to be heard without microphones is louder. Singing in operas is also a bit of an athletic feat – not just being heard, but also singing in 3-5 hour performances without voice wavering even once, while moving and acting, something singing in uncomfortable positions like lying prone on the back or like Natalie Dessay does in Lucia, after rolling down the stairs, and sounding just as fresh and effortless at the end of the night as at the beginning. BTW – Agatha Cristie actually studied classical voice and was quite good, but was told that while she could make her name as a concert performer her voice wasn’t strong enough for opera. Julie Andrews said in her biography that she decided not to pursue opera because she didn’t feel her voice was strong enough. Turned out for the best for both of them…
So while Jackie does have a HUGE potential to become a great opera singer if she changes her mind about it – she said she’s no interest in pursuing opera, she isn’t an opera singer now. As she herself says in all interviews – I’ve not seen many adults who are quite as mature in the interviews as she is.
I sent in my online audition for AGT last week. It’s at:

I hope they consider me!!!
@Tim Juillet – What an inspirational story. Good Luck to you and Good job on your 130 lb weight loss, thats incredible. Loved your video.
Tim Juillet,
I enjoyed the video. Congrats on your progress. My biggest fear is that the audio wasn’t very good for the video. I’m not sure how the AGT producers will react to the bad audio.
Best of luck and I hope you make it on the show!
Thanks for giving it a listen John! Yeah, I’m sure you are right. I had thought of maybe recording the video in a studio setting.. Try to have it professionally edited too. But no budget… & yeah, this is raw.. Maybe I’ll try auditioning live next time if I don’t make it this time around..
Thanks again!
