America’s Got Talent 2010: Laryngospasms
So what is a laryngospasm? According to Wikipedia and other websites – medical or otherwise – it is an uncontrolled reaction (aka spasm) to the vocal chords. So I suppose if you’re singing, that’s one way of looking at it.
But the other, lesser known definition of Laryngospasms (or Spasms for short), is the male singing quartet of practicing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.
The best way to describe this group is that they take popular songs and create musical, medical parodies of them. Case in point in a Christmas party many moons ago a couple of the original members were singing Breaking Up is Hard to Do by Neil Sedaka , and thanks to a suggestion from an audience member, created a parody called:
Waking Up is Hard to Do.
With a couple of albums and videos on YouTube. They have gigs throughout the country all while still keeping their day jobs!
So with a steady gig going on, a chance to go on America’s Got Talent seemed inevitable. As it turns out, their act was all fun and campiness, but is there a spot for them in the mainstream music scene?
No matter the answer, this has been an established group for almost two decades running and have gigs scheduled throughout the United States through 2011. Just go to the The Laryngospasms website for more information. Listen to their music, find out where they are singing at next. Or head to their YouTube channel to see music videos that they have created as well as a video about their trip to the America’s Got Talent auditions in Chicago. Finally if you’re a Facebook junkie, just join their Facebook page to show your support.
I”m sorry, good voices or not, this particular video was in the poorest of taste that I can imagine, especially the reference to being 90 yrs old and also the incision opening. They being nurses themselves just made it worse for me. I picture what they are really thinking while in the O.R. Nobody likes to be a joke in the O.R. especially when you realize that many of the fatalities or malpractice problems happen due to the anesthesia and not the surgery.
My sister’s brother in law must have had one of these clowns for an anesthetist when he died last year in the O.R. due to an anesthesia mistake.
Brother in law’s death or not, I don’t know, I just thought this was in awful taste. Their voices were wonderful though. But they have a very misplaced sense of humor.
I just wanted to respond to the comments above made by Steve Cat. Steve I agree with you that anesthesia and surgery is serious business, but with that said after working in the medical field for 3decades I personally know that those of us who care for sick patients/family members use this type of humor to relax.. When it is all said at the end of each day my patients are very thankful for the care that I have given them. I can tell you we do this to add levity to the stress that all medical folks deal with on a daily basis. I am sorry to hear about your brother..May each day shine a ray of light upon you and your family….
StevieCat,
I’m sorry for your family’s loss. It’s unfortunate when medical mistakes happen. However, I also have worked the past 5 years in the medical field and I agree with Keith that this type of thing is very relaxing and likely makes these singers better doctors.
Steve Cat – sorry for your loss.
I had operations #4 (Feb) and 5 (Apr) on my hip and during both the anesthetist and I were singing this before I went under. It was great to know that while they were professional, the docs also had a sense of humor and tried to treat me as a person not a number up until the cutting started.
BTW we also sang the “Tubthumping” song! You know the song with the line…
“I get knocked down
But I get up again
You’re never going to keep me down!”
Which is my favorite song after a total of 12 surgeries in 53 years!
