America’s Got Talent Winner – Kevin Skinner or Barbara Padilla
I’d been thinking this for a while, but the voting on my poll for the America’s Got Talent Winner just confirmed what I was already thinking and just didn’t want to admit publicly. I think I can safely say that the winner of America’s Got Talent season 4 will be either Barbara Padilla or Kevin Skinner. Everyone else has either fallen off the map (Lawrence Beaman), not had enough exposure (Drew Stevyns), or they just don’t have the wide ranging popularity of these two.
Don’t ask me why these 2 are so popular. They are both really really nice individuals, but they are far from the most talented people on America’s Got Talent. However, they’ve done what you have to do most on America’s Got Talent which is win the hearts of the American people.
Since I’m in the predicting mood, I’ll even go on to predict that Kevin Skinner is going to win America’s Got Talent 2009. Yes, it stings for me to say that since he’s a pretty bad singer. Yes, I couldn’t even bring myself to type that he was a pretty good singer. I had to stick with pretty bad. I think people just love Kevin Skinner’s chicken catcher story. I know I laughed really hard the first time I heard it. I like many Americans also love to see someone come from a chicken catcher to shocking America with a win. That’s the beauty of America and Kevin Skinner seems like a really good guy so at the end of the day I don’t have a problem with him winning. It’s just unfortunate that other talent couldn’t have won.
My question for all of you is assuming I’m right and Kevin Skinner wins, will you be coming to Las Vegas to see Kevin Skinner perform in America’s Got Talent Live? Should we all plan a day to go to the show and we could throw a Pure America’s Got Talent party somewhere in Las Vegas? I’m game if enough people are interested.
Cheer up, John, it’s not so much that Kevin deserves to win, but that he NEEDS to win. I think that’s why America (me) supported him. I used to think he was really good, but each outing he had since the first audition was less than the week before. I will still hope to write that off as nerves. Even Beaman had a case of the nerves. He has the perfect Barry White voice and yet he was out of breath singing it. Nerves can take away your voice, but then again, how will that help him in Vegas.
By the way, when is the Vegas show? I’m all the way in New York (as if you couldn’t tell by my “accent”), so that’s a haul for me. But man what a grand idea you have there!
P.S. I sincerely hope that Padilla does not win. I think of all of the acts, she is the least interesting. And she’s pretty interesting, so that says a lot. But the Fab Five and the Glory Singers (or whatever the kids names are, I’m so bad with names and too lazy to look it up right now cuz I’m at work) were a lot more fun to see. Barbara? Intersting heart wrenching background, beautiful sweet person, but …..snore……..
StevieCat,
They’re selling tickets to the show for Oct 7, 2009 – Dec 13, 2009. Looks like about 60 shows listed on ticketmaster.
I live in Las Vegas, so obviously for me it’s not much of a problem as long as I’m in town myself. So, if people want to choose a time I’m game. If people did want to come, I’d try to get a hold of some PR people for Planet Hollywood/America’s Got Talent Live so we could get some access to the performers or something.
GO kEVIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All I have to say regarding tonight’s results is… WTF??? I thought the producers must have been reading the results backwards. When they cut the first five, they cut my favorites.
Ptooie.
But, as I knew would happen, a singer won. So none of the dance acts should spend even one second wondering what they could have done differently, since there is no way they could have won in the first place.
Why do they even keep up the pretense of having non-singers on the show?
Also, I wasn’t overly impressed with Cirque du Soleil, Shakira (whose presentation was hardly family oriented, and in fact was rather whorish, and besides it looked like to me like she was lip-synching), or Susan Boyle, who I think is vastly overrated, poor thing.
Anyway, John, to answer your question, although it would be fun to go to Vegas, I had my chance earlier this summer but since there is no way I could keep from blowing all my money on the slots, I didn’t (and can’t) go.
And charming as I’m sure he is, there is no way I would sit through a 90-minute Kevin Skinner concert, much less pay for it. I would have more fun blowing my money on the slots.
The Hoff thought this was the best AGT season ever. I disagree. I think this season went right into the crapper when they hosed Arcadian.
FWIW, my sweetie pie watched the show with me, predicted Kevin Skinner would win, and said “as if the judges didn’t know.”
Oh, let’s lighten up everybody. it’s just a TV show.
Donna,
I’m guessing that Kevin Skinner won’t be much more than 15-30 minutes of the show. Most of the show will be the other members of the top 5 or top 10. He’ll just be the name at the end and be the final performance. You could just leave early and head to the slots;-) We need you to come and spend your money here in Las Vegas. Our economy is dieing for your money.
I think it was Piers that said it was the best AGT season ever. He’s crazy. The Terry Fator year was probably the best ever I think. I actually think this might be one of the worst years ever. Almost definitely the worst top 40 ever.
I also agree that the judges already knew the results. I’m sure they were told so they could prepare some comments.
I am going to the first show and will be happy to see Kevin Skinner sing. I have a feeling he will do better. Getting a million dollars can do that for you. Not only that, but give him a break. He has a great “rags to riches” story and most people like the “local boy does good” thing. I am happy for him and his family. I will say that I thought Drew Stevyns and Lawrence Beaman deserved to be in second and third place. They were great. Once Kevin grabbed the hearts of the American people, they couldn’t let go, even if his last two performances weren’t up to par. For the person who said “no one is gong to go to the show”: wrong! They are selling tickets fast now (I got mine three weeks ago) and there are NO VIP tix left (where mine are at $117 a pop) or banquet seating. Yeah, you’re right, nobody’s going. Well, at least you won’t be. Someone who can tear down a person who wins the top prize in a talent show along with a 60 show gig in Vegas obviously has no clue. What will you be doing on Oct. 7th? Watching some junk on TV probably.
Jane,
I agree that some people have gone overboard. However, I’m guessing that none of the finalists would have been huge draws for Las Vegas. In fact, Kevin Skinner just might have been the most popular finalists in Las Vegas because his fans are so blindly loyal to him.
The only thing is that there are a lot of tickets left for the shows. The opening night show has sold quite a few tickets, but 60 shows is a lot of tickets to sell. However, like I said I’m not sure many others would have done better than Kevin.
You are right though. I’ve sold 50 or so tickets myself through this site. On that note, if you’re buying tickets to see Kevin Skinner, use this link to Ticketmaster.
[…] America’s Got Talent season 4. This wasn’t too shocking for me since I’d already predicted Kevin Skinner as AGT winner earlier today. Sorry, I couldn’t help but brag just a little. Although, a lot of the credit […]
Hi StevieCat:
Just a TV show? JUST A TV SHOW??? So was Twenty-One, I will remind you (which was also on NBC, wasn’t it?). But I kid you. I’m not that invested in it. 🙂
I thought the show started quite enjoyably (and even impressively) with Thelma Houston leading all the acts in a terrific rendition of “Don’t Leave Me This Way,” and everything went downhill from there.
Jane: I am delighted that you have tickets and are excited about seeing Kevin Skinner. And I grant you he has a moving rags-to-riches story (although between the $25,000 annual payouts and the seamy underside of the music industry, this may not be the Hallmark card ending that you think it is). But even if I were inclined to step foot in Sin City, which I am not, I would rather spend my money to see some other act. I really have no desire to sit through an entire show of poorly sung, dreary sad country songs. Heaven knows sitting through most of last night’s show was awful enough (fortunately for me Miller’s Crossing was on another channel so I was able to switch back and forth, which lessened the impact of some of last night’s “entertainment.”) If it’s a choice between the likes of Penn & Teller, or Nathan Burton, or Terry Fator, and Kevin Skinner, sorry, it’s not even a close call for my entertainment dollar.
His family supposedly are also singers. Maybe as a family act his singing could be improved.
I wish him well, especially over the long term.
Note to Kevin: pay close attention to the stories of lottery winners, and be smarter than many of them were. Invest the money, such as in trust funds for your kids’ and grandkids’ (eventually) education, as in IRAs for all the members of your family, etc. Don’t go wild and blow the money. You do not know how long your Cinderella story will last, so you have to be smart and provide for the future.
Jane, Loved your post!!
P.S. I Loved Susan Boyle’s interpretation of Wild Horses.
I think Kevin was wonderful when he auditioned. However, I think he got overwhelmed and had stage fright. My daugther, who is a singer also, said that people sing “flat” when they are nervous. If he gets some help, and gets some confidence, he will be wonderful.
Hi NanaX7, John, StevieCat:
You make a good point. I loved Kevin Skinner’s audition, it brought a tear to my eye, and I made sure to watch it on the repeat show the next night. That was a perfect song for him to sing, it worked with his voice, etc. The Willie Nelson song, not so much, and the Aerosmith song, even less. And a lot of pressure probably was being put on him.
The show tries to make it seem like it’s one big frat party with everyone whooping it up in the Orville Reddenbacher room, but as Arcadian started to let us know, there are machinations going on that they do not let us see, so one can only imagine what they’re being told and how they’re being pushed.
I do think Kevin is a humble guy and I am happy for him that this wonderful thing happened in his life.
I am not so thrilled with last night’s show, as I have commented above. Two hours of stuff, an unfortunate percentage of it not too good, and gobs and gobs of commercials. In the meantime the contestants were pretty much given short shrift.
If, as John has stated, the Vegas show will actually be a collection of the finalists, I wish the show would just tell us that. Why are they so coy with what the people actually win and what the contestants who do not finish first get?
I do hope that, if his performance suffered from nervousness, Kevin can get on top of that and relax and sing the way he did at the audition.
“If, as John has stated, the Vegas show will actually be a collection of the finalists”
Oh Donna. Did you just question me? I can’t believe you just wrote that…lol
Just playing. I could be wrong, but they’ve done it in the past so it makes sense they’d do it in the future. In fact, I expect they may do something even more interesting since there are 60 shows to fill. That’s why I previously suggested that Susan Boyle might join the show: https://pureamericasgottalent.com/2009/08/18/susan-boyle-and-the-americas-got-talent-las-vegas-show/
Let’s just hope I can score some free tickets. Honestly, I don’t see myself paying to see Kevin.
Nanax7, thanks for posting that bit of insight. So nice to read it.
And John, it does my heart good to know you’d have to pay to see Kevin of all people after all you’ve said about him!!!! LOL!!!!!
Hey, Donna! I agree about the finale with all the commercials etc., but it’s the same with American Idol with the exception that Idol usually has a VERY entertaining and very funny finale. What I’ve learned to do is dvr the AGT & Idol finales (making sure to set the dvr timer for 5 minutes PAST the end time because these show tend to run over) and start to watch it from the dvr about an hour into the show. By the time the show has a half an hour left, I’ve usually already caught up with the live show because I fast forward through all the commercials and half of the “guest” performances. Well this time around, I had to go to “Meet the Teachers Night” at my son’s middle school. I didn’t get home until after the show had already started, then I made myself dinner and discovered the homework wasn’t done yet and by the time I was ready to watch, there was already only 15 minutes left. So I decided to watch the live show and watch the ending first. I came in at the start of the Susan Boyle performance.
Then once the show was over, I watched the whole show fast forwarding through the commercials, the intro of the judges and half of Shakira and all of Rascal Flats. Guess what? I watched the whole show in under an hour!!! And that included rewatching Susan Boyle and the ending again when Kevin Watched.
A lot of money to be made from sponsors on this show, thus the “million dollar” prize. I don’t care though because I’ve learned to work around the system as I just mentioned. So I really like the show even though I complain about it like I do. We’ve gotta vent about it or else we might stop watching!!! :0) I like it a lot because it helps fill the void between when Idol goes off the air and then doesn’t return until January. It was just too short this year since they did a final 10 instead of a final 5. That made it two shows shorter (performance show and results show).
Typo alert. I didn’t mean to say “when Kevin Watched”, I meant to say “when Kevin won”
StevieCat,
Just to clarify, I didn’t say I would pay to see Kevin. In fact, I’m not sure I can bring myself to pay. Let’s hope some free tickets and publicity on my blog. I might watch him for free.
John,
I know, I know….but if you didn’t get free tickets and were thinking of paying for a ticket so you could see some of the other acts that you liked who would be performing, you’d still be paying to see Kevin as well. heh heh heh!!!
Hi John and StevieCat:
When I was complaining about the show to my sweetie, I rhetorically asked why the show would manipulate things so that Kevin would win, rather than one of the more exciting acts. His reply, “They don’t have to pay him as much.”
Hi Donna,
Haaaaa, good one!!
I think Simon Cowell was desparately trying to create an American version of Susan Boyle. That’s what I think.
StevieCat,
Good point. I’ll have to make sure I get free tickets;-)
Donna,
Actually, considering the passion of Kevin Skinner’s fan base, I think they probably wanted Kevin to win since he could probably sell the most records. More than an opera singer. More than a dance act. More than a percussion act. Perfect opening act for Susan Boyle no?
No!!
I loved watching Kevin, I agree he got worse as the weeks went by instead of better, but I don’t think it was that many weeks, like they made a whole bunch of segments in a matter of days and dragged it out because he was always dressed the same after the very first show. I hope he can make a decent showing at the Vegas stint if nothing else just to boost his confidence. He seems like a really nice guy and deserves a break. I would love to go to Vegas and see him but $$$$ is tight, I wish him the best.
Hi Karyle,
I think I may have posted on one of the other Pure AGT blogs but I thought it was this one. As I don’t see it here, I’ll re-do it. I saw Kevin perform on The Tonight Show (Conan O’Brien) the day after he won AGT. He did really well. The audience loved him, he stayed in tune, he looked relaxed and he looked really good. He had a black shirt with some minor decorations on it. Very subtle country style shirt. He looked like a real class act and he did a good job. Oh, and did I mention he looked reeeeallly good? Well he did. (And the strap mark on his forehead from wearing his hat backwards wasn’t there that night!)
I guess that’s my problem StevieCat. I’m a guy and don’t care for his look;-)
Ok, so sometimes my computer drives me crazy. I just posted a reply to Karyle and when I hit “submit comment”, I got an error page. Sometimes it goes through when that happens and it doesn’t turn up until the next day and other times it goes away in cyberspace. Therefore, if I am repeating myself here, John please erase this one off the board.
Anyway….Hi, Karyle. I wanted to tell you that I saw Kevin perform on Conan O’Brien’s Tonight Show the day after he won AGT. He looked really good and sang well. He didn’t hit any sour notes, he stayed in tune, he played the guitar well, he wore this handsome black subtle cowboy type shirt and all in all he did a good job. The audience loved him. And, he didn’t have any signs of the strap mark on his forehead from wearing his cap backwards!! Oh, and did I mention he looked reeeeeally good??? LOL
To all those idiots who voted for skinner, go and f yourself !!!!!!! Skinner SUCKS
Ummmmm, SkinnerSucks:
First, I don’t think Kevin Skinner is so bad. His first audition last year was very moving. Second, you overreact much? Third, you’re about a year late with your comment.
This year it’s hard to get into the show. WAY too many commercials, and just little snippets of the performances.
