First 5 America’s Got Talent 2009 Finalists
Well, last night was kind of the end of the lameness that has been America’s Got Talent this year. Let’s just say that the show is trying far too hard. They need to just sit back and let us enjoy the talent and the built in drama of the good and bad. Free the judges to say what they really think and get some judges unlike the Hoff and Sharon who can’t tell us what they really feel about the acts for fear of backlash.
Ok, now that I got that out. Here’s the first 5 finalists:
Fab Five – Definitely deserving of the finals. They were spot on. It was a little cruel of the show to try and act like they were going to be eliminated. Sharon did a pretty nice job, but Piers and Hoff made it look totally scripted. Oh well, at least the Fab Five made it and they deserved it.
Grandma Lee – I can’t say Grandma Lee was all that good, but I’m ok with the token act to make it in when they’re as cute as Grandma Lee and they’re living such a special dream for them. Grandma Lee has never been as good as what the judges have said. However, we can all love her for being there and doing her thing. So, I’m cool with this one.
Kevin Skinner – This is a shame for me. I know a lot of people who read this site love Kevin Skinner and have made up all sorts of excuses for why he sucked in his performance. I’ve never been a fan of him and so I don’t know why I’d start now. However, as I said in one of my comments on this site, he’s got 2 thing that America loves: humility and a great story.
Texas Tenors – I actually have mixed feelings about this group. The blonde guy is a star and once they start singing together it’s a hot mess (I stole that description from one of my readers since it described them so well). So, the Blonde guy should be in the finals, but the other 2 shouldn’t.
The Voices of Glory – I’d have kicked these guys off just for being dumb and not forcing the producers to let the sister sing the whole time. Piers said it before and he was right. The sister has the potential to be a star. The brothers are nothing but a drag right now.
Now to those who were sent home…
Acrodunk really deserved it. So much for variety.
Paradizo Dance was cute, but had kind of run their course.
Drew Thomas Magic did kind of disappoint, but I’ll admit I’m a bit surprised that his daughter’s cuteness didn’t pull him through. She’s a star in my book for sure.
Tony and Rory. Seriously, do I have to talk about this one? Shouldn’t have been there in the first place.
Arcadian Broad will be remembered for a long time to come. I hope we find out if there was any fall out from his comments. However, I don’t think we will. I hope he keeps dancing and we’ll see him on So You Think You Can Dance once he’s old enough to compete on it.
I think Tony & Rory had every right to be in the quarter finals, and the semi finals and I dare say the finals, although not to win. That dog was amazing in his performance on Tuesday night. The quarter finals performance was way off, but he was back on target for the semi finals. He was amazing with those frizbees being thrown at him every single second and he didn’t miss one. I don’t know of any other dog who could have kept up that pace especially with the distraction of the music and the audience. I don’t agree with you about that. I think the act would never have won, but if there were a variety show still on like Ed Sullivan used to have, he’d be on that for certain. I feel bad that Tony lost his job of 24 years to persue this, but I’m sure with his new found fame, someone will hire him when he goes back home. I think he could start a business of animal training if he had the notion.
Anyway, while I think the Texas Cowboys are really talented, for some reason unknown even to myself, they creep me out as a whole. Blondie’s teeth are so white they look painted and I don’t know what else it is, but it’s creepy. Can’t explain it, won’t try to anymore. BUT, I do still think they are talented.
I think Drew blew his act when he sort of dedicated the theme of his performance to his daughter. He should have gone with something that would have WOW’d us like all his other performances and saved the lovey thing for his act in Vegas. It was ridiculously boring. Yes, the tricks were good, but nobody noticed because the act was so lame. It’s nice that he loves his daughter, but he assumed that the rest of the audience felt the same connection and they just didn’t. It’s a shame. I would have liked to have seen him in the finals.
I thought the same thing about Arcadian as you did, that he should be on So You Think You Can Dance. He’s a great lyrical dancer and he got robbed by the producers trying to make him look “cute”. It came off too wimpy and it killed his chances. Poor kid.
AND……I WILL STILL VOTE FOR KEVIN SPINNER AND I CAN’T EVEN TELL YOU WHY!!!!! It’s a mystery to me, but there it is. HEY!! Stop throwing rotten vegetables and tomatoes at me, I will NOT stop!!!!
Seriously, though, I think Kevin will have at least a chance at a future in the Country Music genre after this show is over. I know he won’t win, but I hope someone gets their hands on him and signs him. He’s got the soul for it and the right background, and they can get him a singing coach that will help him tremendously. Anyway…..
StevieCat,
Have you never watched the frisbee dogs on ESPN? He’s not that good. He’s not even the best dog on America’s Got Talent. The popovich comedy pet theater was the best one on the show yet.
Your love of Kevin Skinner is what’s wrong with America today. lol He’s a bad singer and you’re perpetuate the myth in his head that he’ll actually make it in country music. Nashville is going to chew him up and spit him out and it won’t be pretty.
Don’t get me wrong. Kevin is a nice guy, but he’s not a great singing talent.
Oh yes, and I did feel a little bit sorry for Tony leaving his job. Although, I believe all these things work out for the best in the long run. It will probably end up being a welcome change for him.
No, John, alas, I do not watch ESPN dog stuff. I’m too busy swooning over Kevin…… (LOL)
We’ll see about Kevin. I hope you are still at this website 2 years from now so I can possibly send you an “I told you so”. If, on the other hand, I’m wrong, my email address will change accordingly. HAAAAAA :0)
P.S. I’m very grateful, John, that you are so polite and professional. If this correspondence was going back and forth on YouTube comments, you’d have eaten me alive by now!!!!!!
I, too, admit I love Kevin Skinner —and I don’t even care much for country music —never listen to it. One thing I don’t like is singers who belt out their songs so they can be heard in the next county. And I don’t like “over-processed’ acts. I prefer someone who can just sing, maybe play piano or guitar, with no theatrics, no fire, no sparks or explosions, and not even much in the way of costuming. I don’t think Kevin is the best male singer in the world, but then neither is Willy Nelson, Johnny Cash, or Joe Cocker —and they didn’t do too badly for themselves. There is something about Kevin’s singing that grips me, moves me. And that might be just as important as raw talent.
Hi CJ.
Quick, before John gets back in this and tells us that Kevin can’t sing at all (LOL)….I’m glad to meet a fellow Kevin fan. I, too, don’t care for country music and NEVER listen to it, but there’s just something so geniune about him that draws me to him.
Opera, on the other hand, is something I REALLY can’t seem to appreciate and so when the opera singers come on, and we just know they are going to win because of their vocal ranges, I go to the kitchen and look for a snack or if dvr’d, I fast forward.
So, I guess what I’m saying is while I don’t care for either genre, I still listen to and vote for Kevin because there’s just something about him that touches my heart and holds my interest.
It’s funny that neither of you like country music, but love Kevin Skinner. I love country music, but don’t really like Kevin. Irony?
John,….. it’s a girl thing.
