America’s Got Talent Top 40 Elimination 2

Time to take a look at the America’s Got Talent 2009 top 40 second elimination episode. I’ll post the video for each elimination and then put a few comments about the elimination. Considering last night was a really weird awkward and down night, tonight’s elimination was about the same.

I was scared about this one because so many people had lamented the Beale Street Flippers not making it to the top 40, but luckily America got this one totally right. I was so happy for the five mormon women in the Fab Five!!

I think this elimination could have gone either way, but the Texas Tenors made one great decision: They chose the right front man for the group. Voting on reality TV shows is dominated by women and he won over a lot of women’s hearts I’m sure. I think I would have taken Pete, but I didn’t really care for either act, so whatever.

I actually kind of hoped that Voices of Glory would get sent home. Yes, I’m sure I’ll get beaten with a wet noodle, but I think they’re way overrated. Sharon was right that the little girl needs to just take it over. Eleisha Miller just made me laugh so I wanted her to stay for more.

Paradizo was basically called the best of the worst in this group. I’m just still reeling that Alizma totally screwed themselves. I’m disappointed with them. I can’t believe there such idiots. Paradizo doesn’t have a real place in Las Vegas. However, they were fun to watch and so I’m happy they made it.

Of course, this is the controversy of the night. I’d be so upset if I was Charles DeWayne Dorsey. Sharon and Hoff just showed their true colors. They haven’t added any value to the show all season and now they’ve made the stupidest decision ever on America’s Got Talent. Piers is so dead on that they made a bad decision and “the biggest scandal in the history of America’s Got Talent.” However, I think that’s exactly why Sharon did what she did.

Oh well, glad to have this week out of the way. The Fab Five were the only memorable group from this week. Otherwise, they can all go home for all I care.

I cannot believe the decision Hoff, and Sharon made. A big mistake just like last week. I wonder who they will vote for next week if they are still judging. Oh well last nights show was terrible and was so tonight’s ending. I could have gone to bed an hour earlier than wasting my time. Oh well it was what it was.

What differentiates AGT is that it’s a variety show – not a singing show. The trouble they got into last year was in letting too many singing acts – solo acts – through. It isn’t another ‘American Idol’ and, truthfully, the acts that have been variety have done better – see Terry Fator vs. Neil E Boyd. So, I think Sharon and Hoff got it right – let the variety act through vs. the solo singer. Maybe the dog act won’t make it all the way through but it will keep the show’s character more variety-focused, and that’s what makes it unique amongst all the ‘vote for’ talent shows.

Kudos to Sharon for calling it right – this is a variety show, not a singing competition. They’ve got to keep variety alive to stay relevant.

I loved the dog act, honestly. Charles was also an excellent singer, and I really didn’t think the dog act would go through, but was actually happy to see them advance. It IS a variety show, and the dog act is very fun to watch.

I just hate when producing a good show means that someone more talented gets sent home. I mean Rory missed a bunch of frisbees last night. It’s like a juggler dropping something. Not good.

Neither really have a future in doing their act so it doesn’t matter too much to me either way I guess.

You hit the nail on the head John, this maybe a variety show and they maybe fun to watch as Crystal Waltz stated, but the fact remains that Rory screwed up an unacceptable number of times and they should of have been sent home for that very reason.

I don’t think we had enough number of shows to conclude that one type of acts is better than other type of acts. Statistically, a couple of cases isn’t enough as it could be due to coincidence.

In the particular case, Terry Fator was unique. He is excellent at what he does and he can sing well. His act was also of the type that could sustain a whole show in Las Vegas. Neal Boyd was just a rather average opera singer – good voice but very bad technique – who couldn’t make it in opera (ok, maybe because of an illness, but “what if” don’t cut it), but stood out on AGT because the crowd had no exposure to opera. BTW – it’s off topic, but if you want to know what excellence in opera really means try watching the broadcast of La Cenerentola (Cinderella) on PBS next week (exact time vaires in different areas – next Saturday at noon and/or Thursday evening and/or following Sunday at 12:30 so check your local listings – http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/episodes/gp-at-the-met-la-cenerentola/preview-of-la-cenerentola/824/ ) Compare lead tenor, Lawrence Brownlee’s control over his voice with Neal Boyd. It’s free, so if you don’t like it you can always turn off the TV :-)

I think the whole idea of “one hour Vegas act” is flawed. Very few acts can sustain a Vegas show. The prize should be suitable for talent.

Regardless, I love animals and I even watch dog shows sometimes, but this was ridiculous. The dog was fun, but I’d enjoy watching cute animals including my cat just as match if not more. When I watched this show I was rather pleased with audience choices until we got to the judges decision. Charles surely deserved to go on so much more. But then, after the judges dragged people to LV only to send them home from the airport, or eliminated Ciana, Kari and others and let some freak eating light bulbs through, they lost all credibility.

    7. # Katy Hasty commented on August 13th, 2009:

America voted these two acts 5th and 6th so it wasn’t like the judges pulled someone from the bottom and passed them through. I wonder how close the votes were between the two acts. I like the dog act as the dog did a great job even if the person made mistakes. There are too many singers and I just tivo past them, this isn’t American Idol but a variety show. I don’t always agree with the judges but this decision wasn’t a ‘scandal” IMO. Charles has a nice voice but his performance wasn’t very interesting for me. I agree that some of the earlier choices the judges made about who should go through were a little strange. I am glad the dog act went through and I look forward to seeing their next performance. I wouldn’t be at all excited to see Charles sing again even if he is the more skilled artist.

      Katy Hasty,
As I said at the end, they can both be sent home. Neither the dog act or Charles was really all that good. I’m fine with a singer when they’re as good as Eli Mattson or have something a little different like Cas Haley. Even that adds to the variety. Charles shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence as those 2.

I agree it’s not a scandal. I thought about using that word, but moved to the word “controversy.” It’s just unfortunate for Charles in my book, but won’t matter in the long run. I wouldn’t pay to see either of them in Las Vegas. Wait, I take that back. I’d drop a quarter in a hat for either of them.
