America’s Got Talent Quarterfinals Week 1
Tonight’s episode of America’s Got Talent confirmed all of my fears. I didn’t see any really amazing talent. Something was just missing from the show. Don’t ask me what it was. Nobody made me say, WOW! Just a bunch of pretty goods and what are they doing there?
BreakSk8 performed to “Smooth Criminal” by Michael Jackson. I think I’m with Piers in this being too slow. However, my biggest issue with them is that they had some ugly girl come out center stage to start their act.
Thia Megia Sang “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. This was a most disappointing act for me. Thia had a couple awesome moments, but this was just the absolutely wrong song for her. I still stick with my assertion that Thia is like Charice Pempengco, but she needs her David Foster to give her the right song.
The Platt Brothers were one of my favorite acts from the auditions. They were unique and interesting. The mouthing of the words wasn’t that interesting. However, they still had a few creative elements. I actually loved the twists from slow to fast. They also had a couple other nice tricks, but I’m still not sure what they’d do for a full act in Las Vegas.
The Diva League should have never been brought back. Piers was dead on with this one. They weren’t even good at lip syncing. Oh wait, that’s because lip syncing is never good. Just get them off the show already.
Manuela Horn looked really nice, but that was about it. What was she doing not yodeling? She’s a yodeler and so I expect her to yodel. I don’t want her to sing poorly.
Grandma Lee had some good jokes. She didn’t have one as good as her previous Krispy Kreme joke, but probably overall was a little better than her audition.
Mosaic Sang “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder. I thought this was a good performance. The percussion person is really good. The singers and instruments are only so so in my book. So, it was just an ok performance. Man, it’s hard to write about a bunch of acts that were so so on this episode of America’s Got Talent.
AcroDunk actually surprised me. I thought it would be more of the same, but they did bring something different and nice. It was like a nice mix of trampoline and dunking. I like it. The only complaint I have is that it would probably be a lot more entertaining Live than it was on TV. They don’t know how to do the camera work for this type of act.
Arcadian Broad Played the piano briefly, then danced to “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins. Arcadian made an absolute mistake playing the piano. He just looks amateur compared to the other pianist on the show. Imagine if they were on the same show. His dancing is where he shines. He’ll probably make it through since he stopped playing and danced, but what a bone head move.
Drew Thomas Magic had a nice trick, but missed some stage presence. I needed some music or something to add the drama. I needed some explanation, some jokes, some something. However, I was surprised that those were the girls. I’m definitely going to have to watch the trick again to know how good it really was. I still generally hate magic on TV.
Kevin Skinner Sang “Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan. I’m still unimpressed. However, I think he did enough for all of his passionate fans to pass him through. It wasn’t horrible, but a few parts of it were quite bad. I wish that he weren’t such a fan favorite, because I’d have liked to hear Piers and even Sharon’s real thoughts on Kevin. My favorite was that his voice kind of cracked. However, we’ll be seeing more of him, and I do love seeing people like Kevin live their dreams. So no hard feelings if he makes it through.
Lake Houston Performing Arts Center Performed to “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” as covered by Miley Cyrus. I thought I wasn’t going to like this act. However, they actually were possibly my favorite act of the night. They had a ton of energy and the choreography was good. The judges thought there was too much, but since we’re only watching it through the camera, I think it was great. We missed a lot of what they would have seen with it being live. I loved it and I didn’t think that I would have.
So, what do you think? Any other thoughts about tonight’s show? Oh yes, I also loved how Nick Cannon was wearing a pimp suit while he pimped his wife on America’s Got Talent. Although, I have a feeling that her coming on the show is more about helping the show than it is helping her. Go Mariah (even if it will probably feel awkward to have you on the show).

I don’t agree with a lot of what you said this time around. The Lake Houston Performing Arts etc were awful. They tripped over the props and the front center girl slid several times. I would NEVER pay money in Vegas to watch these little girls for an hour. The thought of that is ridiculous to me.
Thea sang an age appropriate song but held back a bit. She has a terrific voice and should go through to the next rounds. I think of all the singers, she’s the best contender.
The thing I disagree with you the most about is Arcadia. I play the piano and believe me, this young man is talented. That was a very difficult piece to play and it tied in with the act. He was doing his classical thing that parents made him do and then first chance he got, he broke loose and that was the story the act was telling. There just wasn’t enough time obviously for him to have gotten his point across I guess because neither you nor Piers got it.
One more thing….what’s with the “ugly girl” comment on the BreakSk8 comment? The review sounds cranky. What gives, John? Is the new baby keeping you up all night lately? LOL
StevieCat,
I’m glad we disagree. It’s about time. Too bad you’re wrong on all counts;-)
I’m serious about the ugly girl. Nothing against that girl personally. It just was like a black eye front and center when it should have been them skating.
I’m always cranky. Although, don’t be surprised if the new baby accentuates that characteristic;-)
I don’t agree that Arcadian’s decision to play the piano was wrong AT ALL. As a performer, I understood that the piano was part of his ACT. It was like a ballet – he was telling the story of the little boy who wanted to dance not play piano without words. He wasn’t trying to say “Hey look America! I can dance AND play the piano! Aren’t I amazing?!?” Not at all. The judges were spot-OFF on this one.
Wow, I’m surprised that so many people liked the piano. I’m going to have to watch it again. One thing I’m sure is that he played far too long if he was portraying the story you told me. Although, I’m pretty sure I would have loved to see him just dance.
However, he does have that star quality about him, so I’m pretty sure Arcadian will be going to the AGT Semis.
I totally agree with StevieCat – Arcadia played beautifully and it added to the act and really showed us more of his tremendous talent. Loved it. Thia – I am sure David Foster or Oprah will endorse her and get her started on a great career. She has a great voice and is very talented and can sing a wide range of songs.
Drew was amazing plus or mins a tuxedo!! Acrodunk was great too.
My fav is Kevin – and you were wrong – he can sell CDs and Country Music should pick him up whethere he wins or not. I am waiting to see who the other wild cards are and who Simon brought back because the judges made stupid decisions.
janekline,
I never said he couldn’t sell CDs. I said he couldn’t sell CDs like Garth Brooks. Not even close. Not to mention performance factor, really well written songs, etc. Garth Brooks is to country music what Michael Jackson was to Pop music. Kevin is not even a close part of the conversation.
I do like the talk about who will be coming back. I think Tallan (guitar player) is a for sure. Also, the little hawaiian girl and probably the American Idol singer.
You never know what Kevin can do until he is given a chance and has some professional people working with him to help him make strong what is weak in him. He sings to the masses and to the individual – people stop and listen. I hope they bring bag the guitar player – he was unreal. The Hawaiian girl too. they are young and have a life and career ahead of them really. The former Idol – dont know – she did not stand out to me- not memorable. I hope they give Kari a shot personally.
I wonder about all of this- simon’s call on the plane etc. sending them to Vegas to cut them in the hanger. what is that about.
Also I thought it was a shame the woman who sang with her brother did not go through because the brother took another show??? What the hell!!!! She was so good and loved to hear her sing – she could have gone a long way here. I would be so angry with him. To me he made a commitment to this show first and to his sister!!! So much for brothers. I felt so sorry for her. Next time she needs to ditch the loser brother and sing solo – unreal
Was Barbara Padilla kicked off of America’s Got Talent?
Nope. Barbara Padilla has yet to perform in the quarterfinals.
janekline,
I agree so much about the sister. She was one of the potential highlights of the show and someone I could really get behind. I was very sad to lose her.
However, I’m not so mad at the brother as you. I think it says so much about the sister that she would support her brother when he had a good opportunity. Sure, it doesn’t feel quite right, but we don’t know what all went into his and her decision.
I liked Arcadian, and I liked his piano playing too. I also had piano lessons, and I thought he was good.
One thing I’d like to say in defense of Thia and her choice of song. I don’t know how many people are aware of it but contestants don’t have free choice of music. Sometimes they choose a song and producers tell they don’t have the rights to it. I also heard that sometimes producers just give them something to sing on a whim. Ever since I read about it – in too many posts from different witnesses to discount – I became weary of criticising singers for doing “the wrong song”.
kitty,
You’re so right about the song. I heard it straight from the Jessica Price camp. So, I don’t really hold it against her. I’m just disappointed for her since I think she has more talent than that song shows. I’ll do a better job of describing it in the future.
Hey! Somehow I hadn’t been receiving this particular post. Oh, well, the plenty that I would have had to say has already been said since I was last on it a few weeks ago! heh heh.
Anyhow, I think it great that the prize is now SEVERAL shows in Vegas instead of just one. Now THAT’S a prize. However, I wouldn’t want to buy tickets for it now, now knowing who was in the running for it. I certainly don’t want to pay $103 to see that dog act or the granny comedian!!! They should have waited until we are down to the final 5 to put tickets on sale. I know Vegas is all about gambling, but we haven’t even gotten to the semi-finals yet. Come on AGT!! Get your act together!
Oopps, I had a typo on my last post. I meant to say “However, I wouldn’t want to buy tickets now, NOT knowing who was in the running”
and Oh, Oh, John. We’re in trouble again. Somehow I happen to agree with everything you said in your review of last night’s elimination round including the glory singers group but especially the (non) violin playing triplets. They blew it big time. And yes, of course, you’re right. I hadn’t thought about it but now that I do, you have a valid point….Sharon must have picked the dog act over the singer because of what Piers said. He was desparately trying to let her know “don’t pick that dog act”. What a shame that was. What the heck were they thinking? She must have a favorite singer in mind that she wanted to stack the odds in favor of by eliminating this guy last night. But, let’s not forget though that the dog act came in 5th and the singer 6th, so by votes alone, he would have been gone anyway, but isn’t that what the judges choice was about in the first place? To eliminate the mistake when America votes it wrong??? Sort of like the lifesave on American Idol that was added last year?
I do believe that Sharon is trying to give Kevin as big a break as she possibly can and by eliminating one of his main singing competitors, she did just that.
StevieCat,
They usually have the top acts perform at the show and not just the winner. So, it’s reasonable to buy it early. Also, the dog act won’t win, he was fifth or sixth on a weak night.
I’m glad we agree.
