I’m sick of one thing and i see it every year.
First off let me say i am NOT racist.

But the Neal E. Boyd’s of the world make me sick.
The blubbering whale is clearly trying to buy sympathy with his crying every single week.

My uncle is African American and he is also tired of the way these guys are making African Americans look.

It’s like they always want the sympathy vote and are always in need of constant approval.

    2. # John commented on September 12th, 2008:

      Max,
Do you really have to bring race into this? A “blubbering whale” that cries for sympathy (as you describe) could be a white person, an Asian person, etc just as much as a black person. Let’s leave out the race issue since I don’t think it should be an issue and that kind of talk isn’t productive on this blog even if it is an issue.

His crying does seem over the top, but I think America will realize it and not vote if that’s why he’s doing it.

For me, Neal Boyd isn’t my favorite performer on the show, but I do like the guy and I do enjoy watching him perform. I’m not sure what it is about him, but I find a lot of joy watching him perform.

    3. # Regina commented on September 12th, 2008:

Neil’s got a good backstory for TV, and yes, he’s emotional. Not a bad thing in the entertainment world. (Notice most of the acts in the top 10 have very good TV backstories….) Hey, Queen Emily cries practically every episode too, she’s not a small lady, is African-American (Neil, obviously, is multi-racial as his mother is clearly of European descent), and lived on welfare. Why not slam her too for crying, being fat and being black?

The point is: Both can sing. Very well. Neil’s got a beautiful tone and delivers fantastic, emotive performances and Queen Emily is an Aretha protigee.

Boy, though, if I could wish one person be changed out of the top ten, it would be Jonathan for Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn’s adorable, and she’s got a lot of poise for a 4 year old. Compared with Jonathan, who’s trained for years to master a skill that’s not easy while being ridiculed, culminating in some really thrilling performances? I’ll take Jonathan any day. She’s cute, he’s worked *so* much harder and is fantastic. *sigh*

Really, how much of the Disney songbook sung by a cute little voice do we have to hear? I’m waiting for the next song to be “Dear Mr. Jesus.” Please, folks, you’re going to break her heart anyway. That’s OK. If she wants to be in showbiz she’s got to get used to it. Disney will pick her up and put her in a show (a la Olson twins & Raven-Symone). Just let her go!

Hey there was a local news report that quoted your blog. I was super excited when I saw that. I’m like I know that guy, then I realized, well not really, but still it was so cool! I feel like I know you:)

    5. # Allyn commented on September 12th, 2008:

Regina, I totally agree with you about Kaitlyn and Jonathan – when I realized that he was going home, my stomach started to hurt. Not that I expected him to win it all (heck, I have people I like more than him), but I would have loved to have seen him in the top 10. And honestly, I just don’t think Joseph Hall is all that good an Elvis. *shrug*

My pick for the finals is either Eli or Emily. I love Neal and I love his voice, but I don’t know… I think America will get a little sick of his emotional displays. Give me a CD of Emily or Eli and I’ll stick it in my car right now. They’re just so good!

    6. # Brandon commented on September 12th, 2008:

I’m rooting for Eli Mattson. His voice is amazing and I’d really like to see him succeed. Hopefully he doesn’t end up like Cas Haley whom I liked last year and end up the first loser. Regardless of if he wins or not, I’m sure a record company will sign him and he’ll have a good career.

    7. # John commented on September 12th, 2008:

It really is a travesty that Jonathan didn’t make it and Kaitlyn did. Granted, my son (who is 4) couldn’t do what she could, but neither he nor myself could do even close to what Jonathan did. I was also a little sad to see Sarah Lenore go home. She was quite talented, but just a little raw and needed a little more training and the right producer.

Eli has a VERY good shot of winning. The only question is will Eli’s fans become apathetic and not vote him through to the win. I agree that Cas was awesome last year too and a win would have done wonders for him.

    8. # John commented on September 12th, 2008:

      Angela,
I know exactly what you were saying. I saw that quote and was surprised when it was me that he was quoting. Made me happy. Mostly because I think I am Jessica Price’s biggest fan. It’s just unfortunate that I think she’s not going to go on much farther. I think Jessica is about to get run over by some admittedly talented people.

I also feel like I know you a bit too Angela after reading your blog. I’ve felt that many times blogging. Kind of a fun little connection with people from all over the world.

    9. # Bailey commented on September 13th, 2008:

What kind of an act is a 4 yr. old girl going to provide that people in Las Vegas want to watch??

      Remember Jon Benet?

    10. # Regina commented on September 13th, 2008:

      Bailey,

Exactly. Do we really want to sit through an hour and a half of her singing the Disney songbook? *shudder*. Let’s just have the folks at Disney/ABC put her in one of their family sitcoms where we can all revel in her cuteness in measured doses. And yes, that’s coming from a Mom of a 6 year old who could never do what she’s doing – I get that she’s got incredible poise and guts for even getting up there. My son would likely stare at everyone then run and hide behind the curtain.

That doesn’t mean she can truly entertain any more than those elementary school plays are meant to be produced on Broadway for millions to see. They’re cute, we’re amazed and proud, and then we all go get ice cream.

Now who I want to win? Well I love Eli’s voice, truly, and I’m amazed at how he interprets others’ hit songs in a way that is revealing and new – a la Cas, whom I also love. What I worry about is AGT’s track record with singers. Everyone remember Bianca Ryan? Season 1 winner? Yah. I thought so. What I love about AGT that separates it from StarSearAmericanIdoNashvilleStar land (i.e. all those singing competition reality shows that are starting to run together in my mind) is that it’s a variety act show, not just a singing show. It gives a venue for all those other forms of entertainment that are not magnificent singing performances. What is it with singing that has us all so entranced? Is it that we miss being sung to sleep at night by our parents?

As much as I’d love to see Eli win and be famous (I would buy his album in a minute, really), I’d like more for a non-great-singer act to win to preserve the uniqueness of this show and prevent another singing-contest retread hydra-morph.

So because of that, I’ve got to vote for Nuttin But Strings. What they do is unique, very talented, has a broad audience, is highly entertaining and would absolutely sustain 90 minutes +. And I really still wish another non-singing variety act had also made it through so we could have more balance in our top 10.

      Ah, well.

      Regina

I still think that Donald Braswell will win the show?

    12. # Mary Beth Gernaat commented on September 16th, 2008:

I have to be Jessica’s biggest fan right along side of you… of course she’s my neice so I’m kinda biased! She’s such a powerhouse singer if they would just let her pick a song that showcased her voice. Up until now her song selections haven’t been good…but maybe this time. Not sure what she’s working on…so we’ll all be surprised. Whatever happens, she’ll for sure go on to bigger and better things than what she’s been doing…God willing.

    13. # beverly commented on September 16th, 2008:

I still think in my heart that Donald Braswell will win the show he has a great voice and knows how to use it when it is needed. his voice is also pure and strong.I am voting for him all the way!!!!!

    14. # Mary Lou commented on September 16th, 2008:

I feel strongly that Eli Mattson should definitely win because he has a double talent. Not only can he play the keys unbelievably but his style of singing far outweighs all the other singers. He is a young Billy Joel and would definitely draw more crowds in Las Vegas than anybody else. Amen!

    15. # Spirit commented on September 16th, 2008:

For me, Donald is the clear and only choice. His voice is so pure, strong and beautiful. His stage presence is awesome, as well as his humility and well, he is handsome , to boot. At a time where whispery , wishy-washy voices, pitiful lyrics and unintelligible pronunciations are the norm, it is such a breath of fresh air to listen to Donald. He also represents family values, which seems to be a dying thing nowadays.
I think Neal is good but I don’t see him in Las vegas. He should head to Europe to the Opera Stage.
Eli is good, but six months down the road, I’d just remember his name and voice as some one I heard somewhere. Totally forgettable.
The only one I’d pay to see is Donald Braswell…over and over again.

    16. # Braden commented on September 17th, 2008:

Eli is the only person left that I care about. It’s gotta be him.

    18. # dolores goodwin commented on September 18th, 2008:

donald has the best and most appealing voice. why the judges switch is hard to understand, If he was great one night what happened to have them change so drastically? He is by far is the best act and would be very successful in Vegas. does make you think the show is rigged as has been mentioned before. d goodwin

    19. # John commented on September 18th, 2008:

      dolores,
Just remember that sometimes criticism from the judges is the best thing that can happen to a contestant. Often on a reality show like this if the judges gush over someone, then the fans of that person don’t get out and vote. In the opposite light, criticism often rallies the fan of a particular contestant to vote more than they would have done previously.

I don’t think it’s rigged. I do believe they have an agenda and will use every way reasonably possible to sway and influence America. Nothing wrong with that in my book as long as it doesn’t cross the line into rigging someone’s failure.

    20. # Ingrid Yiannios commented on September 18th, 2008:

Donald is by far the biggest talent on the show. Check out his CD on his website donaldbraswell.com. I purchased his CD and cannot get enough of it. Unlike Neal, he sings pop and opera equally well.

    21. # beverly commented on September 19th, 2008:

Donald is by far the biggest talent on the show and I have two of his CD Already . they are great. I love playing them over and over again.I would like to see what Piers,Sharon andDavid will do when Jerry said that Donald is the winner of the show I hope. And he is on his way to the top and vegas. I will go and see him there in a heartbeat!!!!

    22. # beverly commented on September 19th, 2008:

Donald needs to win the show with his talent.

Carlos Aponte, I believe, the best singer I may have ever heard, and definitely, by far, the best performer on your show. I can’t believe he was dismissed. I smell a rat, and am never going to watch the show ever again.
